Adrienne started her journey into the world of lactation as a mother struggling to breastfeed

her oldest son. Thanks to an amazing support group and a wonderful IBCLC she was able to meet her own feeding goals. Adrienne got involved in La Leche League (LLL) and became an accredited LLL leader. Her 2nd son was born the same day as her accreditation. As a LLL leader Adrienne led group meetings, provided breastfeeding support via the phone and continued her lactation education. The more involved she was the more her passion for breastfeeding and helping families grew. In 2003, Adrienne had completed all the prerequisites to sit for the certification exam given by International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). Adrienne passed the exam and became an IBCLC. She has recertified every 5 years as required by the IBLCE and continues to increase her knowledge through conferences, classes and hands on practice. Adrienne has worked in the hospital, in community clinics and volunteered with both La Leche League and now, Baby Cafe Bakersfield. She is a founding member and current board president of Central Valley Lactation Association. She is active in lactation advocacy at the local, state and national levels. She works tirelessly to ensure families have the support they need for as long as they are breastfeeding. Holistic is defined as dealing with or treating the whole of something or someone and not just a part. Lactation is a relationship that involves two people and breastfeeding. When working with breastfeeding problems or concerns, it is important to treat both people and breastfeeding itself. As an IBCLC, it is Adrienne's job to assess all three of these parts and figure out the best plan to improve breastfeeding outcomes. My baby turns 30 today. Such a joy and privilege to be his mama. From a sweet, sweet baby to an energetic, active boy, to a football playing teenager, onto college and rugby and then meeting a wonderful woman, soon to be his wife, he has added so much happiness to our lives. We are blessed to be your parents and love you more than you will ever know. Have a great 30th birthday.

One of the most important things you can do to help breastfeeding get off to a good start is keeping your baby skin-to-skin with you after birth and throughout the early weeks.

Place your baby directly on your chest with a light blanket covering their back to keep them warm and comfortable. Skin-to-skin time should occur in cycles of at least one hour. That means baby should not be removed in that hour.

Skin-to-skin helps by:

- Regulating your baby’s body temperature
-Supporting brain development and helping “wire” the brain
-Reminding babies of their natural breastfeeding instincts
-Promoting bonding and attachment
-Providing comfort and pain relief
- Releasing oxytocin, which helps trigger milk let-down and supports milk production

Babies who spend time skin-to-skin often learn to latch sooner and more effectively, helping create a strong foundation for breastfeeding success.

Did you know that in Kern County, 55% of new mother's plan to exclusively breastfeed, yet just 22% are exclusively breastfeeding. This falls well below the state average of 56% exclusive at 3 months and 25% at 6 months. Kern County ranks near the bottom in counties in California for diabetes (47/58), obesity (57/58), and heart disease (58/58). Exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk of these diseases and many others. Breastfeeding is s public health issue. When families have the support they need, exclusive breastfeeding increases. Evidence-based education, information, and breastfeeding support improve the health of our community.
