Most people never connect their mouth to their heart. They should.

Chronic inflammation doesn't stay put. Persistent gum disease has been linked to higher cardiovascular risk — a clear example of how immune and inflammatory signals move through the body and reach the heart.

It's also the kind of connection a standard cholesterol panel won't show you. Inflammation is one of the root-cause drivers I look at when mapping cardiovascular risk — because heart disease was never just a cholesterol problem.

One of the most common reasons people put off their heart health: they're not sure where to even begin. So here's how it actually works with us — three clear steps, no maze.

Explore. We start with where you stand today, using a simple assessment to surface your strengths and your risk areas.

Deep Dive. From there, we look at the biology actually driving your risk — the advanced markers and root-cause factors a standard checkup tends to skip.

Engage. Then we build a plan around you: personalized, root-cause, and designed for the long run, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Clarity is what turns good intentions into action. You don't have to figure out your heart health alone — you just need a place to start.

Step one takes a few minutes. Comment "quiz" to take our HeartWell Quiz and see where you stand.

Most people think heart health comes down to cholesterol…

But there are 5 powerful heart tests that can reveal your cardiovascular risk years before symptoms appear.

These tests look at things like:

• Vascular age and artery calcium buildup
• Early plaque in the carotid arteries
• Cardiorespiratory fitness (VO₂ max)
• Exercise capacity and heart efficiency
• Arterial stiffness and vascular aging

Together, they can give a much deeper picture of your heart health, longevity, and future risk than traditional screening alone.

We put together a free guide that explains all five.

Researchers transplanted the gut microbiome of a young mouse into an old one.

Within a few weeks, the older animal showed measurable improvement — better metabolic markers, better physical function.

This is animal research. It is not a protocol, and it does not translate directly to people.

But it points at something worth taking seriously: the microbiome may not simply reflect your health. It appears to participate in it.

In cardiovascular medicine we have spent decades treating the artery. The signals that damage arteries — inflammatory, metabolic, immune — frequently originate somewhere else entirely.

That's why I keep asking upstream questions.

When we talk about heart health, the conversation usually stops at diet and exercise. But your heart is shaped by more than what you eat and how you move — your environment plays a role too.

Air pollution, for example, has been linked to inflammation, higher blood pressure, and increased cardiovascular risk. Microplastics have recently been found in arterial plaque — an emerging area researchers are still actively studying. And everyday exposures can contribute to oxidative stress, one of the upstream factors in vascular aging.

It's a lot — but here's the empowering part: many of these inputs are modifiable, and their downstream effects are measurable through inflammatory and metabolic markers. You're not powerless against your environment. You can see how your body is responding and act on it.

That's what root-cause cardiology is for: understanding the full picture, not just the obvious pieces.

Most people have never had their gut assessed. Not once.

We run lipid panels every year. Metabolic panels. Blood pressure at every visit.

Meanwhile the microbiome — which influences immune signaling, inflammatory tone, and metabolic function — goes unmeasured for most patients' entire lives.

In this clip, Dr. Oscar Coetzee, PhD, DCN, argues that a stool analysis belongs in routine data collection rather than the specialty bin. It's non-invasive, done at home, and can indicate whether the keystone commensal strains are present or depleted.

I'm not saying everyone needs one. I'm saying that "we never looked" isn't the same as "there's nothing there."

What's worth measuring depends on your history and your risk profile.

There's a false choice a lot of patients feel forced into: conventional cardiology, or the functional, root-cause approach. As if you have to pick a side.

Integrative cardiology refuses that trade-off. It's both.

It means keeping everything conventional medicine does well — advanced diagnostics, evidence-based treatment, the rigor of board-certified cardiology — and pairing it with root-cause, whole-person care that asks why the risk is there in the first place.

Inflammation, metabolism, hormones, genetics, stress, sleep: the upstream drivers a purely conventional visit often doesn't have time to explore.

You shouldn't have to choose between rigor and root cause. The most complete picture of your heart comes from using both, so nothing that affects it gets overlooked.

❤️ Not all heart risk looks the same.

Two people can have the same cholesterol number —
and completely different underlying causes.

The HeartWell Quiz helps you:

• Identify your lipid & inflammation pattern
• Understand your likely risk drivers
• Learn what type of testing may be right for you
• Take a more personalized approach to prevention

Because heart health isn’t one-size-fits-all.
It’s individualized.

Statins do something important: they lower LDL cholesterol, and for many patients that genuinely matters. But lowering one number isn't the same as addressing your whole risk.

Cardiovascular disease is driven by more than cholesterol — inflammation, insulin resistance, blood pressure, vascular aging, and other root-cause factors all play a part. A statin doesn't reach most of those. Which is why someone can be "treated," with a reassuring lipid panel, and still carry meaningful risk that's gone unaddressed.

This isn't an argument against statins. It's an argument for looking at the full picture: what's driving your risk, and what a single medication can and can't do about it.

I get into this in depth on the podcast. Comment "podcast" and I'll send you where to listen.
