🔎 What does a Genealogy Deep Dive really look like?
Genealogy research isn't about simply typing a name into a search box and finding an answer in a matter of seconds.
Usually, it's hours of following clues, checking conflicting records, manually browsing hundreds of digitized images, and knowing when an index isn't telling the whole story.
Yesterday, I spent a deep-dive research session working through one family's lineage, beginning in Michigan and eventually following the trail back into Ontario, Canada.
Along the way, I:
📜 Reviewed multiple census records to establish family relationships, ages, occupations, residences, and places of birth.
🔎 Searched extensively for a missing 19th-century Michigan birth record across available online collections.
📖 Manually browsed historical birth registers when the records were not fully indexed—eliminating an entire county register as a possible source.
🇨🇦 Followed the family across the border into Ontario and began establishing the Canadian ancestral line.
💍 Located a marriage record that was indexed through one source but did not initially provide access to the original image.
🧐 Rather than stopping with the index, I went into the FamilySearch microfilm and manually worked through the images—despite the records not being arranged chronologically.
🎯 And eventually, I found the original marriage register entry.
That one record opened another door, providing information about the couple's parents, birthplace, residence, marriage location, and the previous generation.
And that's the part of genealogy research that often isn't visible from the outside.
The discovery is exciting—but the work behind the discovery is where the real research happens.
Not every record is online.
Not every record is indexed correctly.
Not every index leads directly to the original document.
And sometimes a record isn't found at all—but the research still tells us where to look next.
This is why professional genealogy requires more than knowing how to search a database. It requires persistence, analysis, familiarity with historical records, and the willingness to follow a clue wherever it leads.
