When someone only wants to focus on your reaction instead of what they did to cause your reaction; that is manipulation!
It’s one of the most commonly used tactics by people who don’t want to take responsibility for the harm they’ve caused.
Instead of addressing what they did, the conversation is suddenly about how you responded.
Your pain becomes the problem.
Your anger becomes the issue.
Your boundaries become too much.
And just like that, their behaviours, their actions, and their betrayals disappear from the point of discussion.
When someone hurts you or betrays your trust and then finds a way to blame you for it, that is manipulation; plain and simple.
Because being accountable requires them to sit with the discomfort of what they’ve done; manipulation requires avoiding it.
So they flip the narrative because they don’t want to talk about their lies, their deceptiveness, their betrayals, their disrespect, or their broken promises.
They want to talk about your tone, your emotions, and the moment you finally snapped after being pushed too far for too long, because they know that if they can make your reaction look worse than their behaviour, they'll never have to take responsibility for what caused it.
Normal, healthy people don’t use your emotional response against you when they’ve caused the pain.
Normal, healthy people don’t try to silence someone they’ve consistently disrespected.
Your reaction did not come out of nowhere; it came from a pattern or patterns over a long period of time, from being dismissed, ignored, lied to, gaslit, or made to feel like your feelings were an inconvenience.
It came from having your trust repeatedly broken and then being told you’re the problem for not handling it quietly.
When someone focuses solely on your reaction while completely negating their own actions, it’s not because they want resolution, peace, or healing; it’s because they want control.
Control of the narrative, control of the blame, control of how people see you, and control of the outcome.
So if you ever find yourself constantly defending your emotions instead of having your pain acknowledged, pay attention!
Because the conversation isn’t being avoided by accident, it’s being redirected on purpose!
