Black Breastfeeding Week 🖤🤎

At 6 months: Roughly 48% to 55% of Black infants continue breastfeeding at six months.

At 12 months: About 26% to 31% of Black infants are still receiving breast milk at one year.

Exclusive breastfeeding: Rates drop further when looking at exclusive breast milk feeding (no formula or other foods) at 3 and 6 months.

Choosing to breastfeed as a young Black parent is a powerful, positive decision that brings immense health benefits, deep emotional bonding, and a sense of cultural reclamation. While teen parents and Black mothers frequently face systemic barriers and a lack of targeted support in healthcare settings, stepping into your breastfeeding journey is an empowering act of love and resilience. From initiation to duration, every ounce of breastmilk benefits. For 2wks, 6wks, 6mo or a year; it's worth it!!!

"My family has always supported me on my breastfeeding journey, but my biggest encouragement on this journey has always been my babies! They're the ones who have made breastfeeding so easy for me. I never wanted to give up nursing my children because breastfeeding wasn't just nourishment to them, it was also comforting. They nursed whenever they fell and got hurt, were sick, when they were sleepy, uncomfortable, etc. That has been important to me because I know that I have an unbreakable bond with my children and that is super special to know I am their entire world, because best believe that they are mine."

Initiation/Ever Breastfed: Roughly 73.6% to 79.4% of Black infants are ever breastfed or initiate breastfeeding in the hospital, compared to about 88.2% of White infants.

It's National Breastfeeding Month!!
I started my journey as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor and quickly found a passion for education, especially with Women of Color. Breastfeeding disparities are getting better but still waiting progress.
I encourage All those who are offering breast milk to their babies, keep up the good work, stay encouraged, don't quit even on the hardest day! And if you know a breastfeeding mom, send them an encouraging note, and encouraging song or pat on the back.
