Summer is exciting, but for a lot of our families it also brings a wave of "why is my child struggling more right now?"

Routines disappear. School ends. Schedules that kept things predictable are suddenly gone. And kids who worked so hard all year can feel that shift in ways that are really hard to watch.

You're not doing anything wrong. Transitions are genuinely harder for many autistic children, and summer is one of the biggest transitions of the year.

A few small things that can help:

Keep one or two routines as anchors, even if everything else is looser. A consistent morning activity or a regular mealtime can do more than you'd expect.

Give as much warning as you can before changes happen. A quick "in 10 minutes we're going to..." goes a long way.

And don't underestimate just being together. Low-pressure, connection-focused time matters, even when it doesn't feel "therapeutic."

Big news from our team.

Please help us welcome Nikki Patun, LPCC-NCC, as the new Chief Clinical Officer of JtC AUSM!

If your family has worked with us over the past few years, there's a good chance Nikki has had a hand in your child's care. She's spent years guiding our clinicians, shaping how we build treatment plans, and making sure the families we serve feel genuinely supported, first as a Clinical Supervisor and then as our QSP Lead.

With over three years of dedicated autism-specific clinical experience, Nikki brings deep expertise to the role. But what the families and staff who know her talk about most is her heart. She has a way of sitting with a worried parent or a busy clinician and leaving both feeling cared for and a little more hopeful.

In this new role, Nikki will lead our clinical vision and help us keep doing what we're here to do: walk alongside children and families with compassion and care.

As Mental Health Awareness Month wraps up, we want to leave one idea on the table that does not expire with the calendar.

For autistic children and the families who love them, mental health and well-being are part of everyday life. The stress, the small victories, the search for someone who truly gets it. None of that fits neatly inside one month.

At JtC AUSM, our approach starts from connection first. Using Relationship Development Intervention (RDI), we focus on building real, two-way relationships between children and their families, because that is where lasting confidence and emotional resilience grow.

Day one back in St. Louis Park.

Last Monday our St. Louis Park location reopened its doors, and today the lights are on, the team is in, and families are walking back into a space built around them.

For the families we serve, consistency matters. Familiar faces, a familiar room, a familiar rhythm. That is what RDI is built on, and that is what we are committed to offering across both of our locations in Burnsville and St. Louis Park.
