I do not think the future of counseling is only about better techniques. Of course, we need evidence-based treatments, manuals, protocols, and training programs, BUT technique is not enough by itself.

The clinicians I admire most are not only technically skilled. They are steady, curious, honest, and able to tolerate complexity.

Technique matters, but technique is downstream of the person using it.

Before we can talk about trauma treatment, we must first know what trauma is and how it works.

In episode 2, I lay a foundation for understanding trauma before reprocessing begins and explain how it impacts memory, emotion, and the body’s survival systems.

One of the hardest parts of talking with clients about personality disorder diagnoses is that the label can sound like a verdict on who they are.

I find that a diagnosis is often more helpful when it is framed as a relationship dynamic. What keeps happening in relationships when you feel exposed, controlled, abandoned, misunderstood, or unable to manage what is being asked of you?

Not, “This is who you are.” More like, “This is a dynamic we can learn to understand, interrupt, and change.”

At that level, this diagnosis can begin to make sense. A good diagnosis shouldn't become a cage – it should become a map.

Looking at anxiety through history broadens our understanding and invites more curiosity, humility, and compassion. That is why I always recommend this book to other clinicians (or anyone really).

Throughout history, people have experienced many of the same struggles we recognize today, but they've interpreted them through different cultural, religious, and scientific lenses. Just as better telescopes didn't create more galaxies—they simply helped us see what was already there—our modern language helps us recognize experiences that have always existed.

What I appreciated most about this book is the reminder that while psychology offers an important perspective on anxiety, it shouldn't be the only one.

Being both a pastor and a clinician has taught me that role clarity is not just an ethical rule. It is something you have to practice in real relationships.

But for me, the growth point has been becoming a clinician who understands faith, culture, family systems, trauma, and church life, while still practicing with informed consent, clear boundaries, clinical judgment, and respect for the client’s stated goals.

Faith-sensitive care (my own position for myself) does not require counseling to become spiritual direction. It requires clinical care that is skilled enough, bounded enough, and culturally competent enough to engage faith without taking over the work.

What is EMDR, really?

It might sound a little unusual at first, but EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps people process traumatic memories and move forward with greater freedom.

When a client says something painful and the room goes quiet, the impulse to speak can be strong. But sometimes, the client needs time to hear what they just said.

One simple practice I often recommend is this: wait ten seconds before saying anything. Just long enough to give the client room to think, feel, and decide whether they have more to say.

Clinicians are not only responsible for what they say – they're also responsible for providing clients with enough room to think.

For my fellow clinicians, I've been thinking about parallel process recently and how a lot of the anxiety counselors/therapists carry isn't really about the client's material. It's performance anxiety: am I skilled enough, do I know enough, am I the right person for this?

Over the years, I've found that a surprising amount of anxiety dissolves the moment you stop pretending you have to be the all-knowing expert.

I'll sometimes tell a client, "I don't know enough about this yet to be as helpful as I want to be. What if we both read up on it this week and come back and compare notes?" This honesty turns the gap into something we're working on together.

Every experienced clinician I respect was once the person in the room who had no idea what they were doing. This is just one of the many truths about being new in the mental health profession that I wish I had known sooner.
