Mortuary Masterclass Funeral facts, grief education, and real talk from a working mortician/professor

One thing I wish more people understood about grief is that you get to have your own timeline.

People will sometimes make comments that don’t sit well, even if they mean well. “You should be doing better by now.” “It’s been long enough.” “You need to move on.”

Try reframing those comments instead of letting them become part of your grief story. Their timeline isn’t your timeline. You know what you’ve lost, you know what that person meant to you, and you get to decide what healing looks like for you.

As a funeral director, I’ve seen enough grief to know there really is no right way or right amount of time to grieve. Give yourself the space to do it your way.

A burial vault isn’t required to protect the casket from the elements. In most cemeteries, it’s used to help support the ground around the grave and prevent the soil from settling over time. ⚰️

But are burial vaults actually required by law? That answer may surprise you.

We really don’t like to think about our own funeral. I get it. Talking about death can feel uncomfortable, and planning for something you hope won’t happen anytime soon probably isn’t high on anyone’s list.

But planning ahead can be one of the most thoughtful things you do for your family.

You don’t have to prepay for a funeral or have every single detail figured out. Start with a conversation. Let your family know whether you want to be buried or cremated. Think about what kind of service you would want. Write down your wishes and make sure your family knows where to find important documents.

Because when your family is grieving, the last thing you want is for them to be sitting in a funeral home wondering what you would have wanted.

Planning ahead isn’t about planning to die. It’s about making things a little easier for the people you love when that day eventually comes.

Have the conversation now. You’ll be glad you did. ❤️

Life insurance is probably more affordable than you think.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that life insurance is something that costs a fortune. The truth is, depending on your age, health, coverage amount, and policy type, you may be surprised by how affordable a term life insurance policy can be.

Think about everything we spend money on every month, subscriptions, eating out, coffee, entertainment. Now consider putting some of that money toward protecting the people who depend on you.

If something happened to you, could your family comfortably cover the mortgage, bills, childcare, debts, and funeral expenses?

You don’t buy life insurance because you plan to die. You buy it because you don’t get to choose when you die.

As someone who works in the funeral industry, I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be when a family is grieving while also trying to figure out how they’re going to pay for everything.

One of my favorite places to get life insurance rates is Zander Insurance. It’s a great place to start if you want to see what coverage might look like for your situation.

Don’t assume you can’t afford it.

Take a few minutes and find out. Your family is worth protecting. ❤️

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to help your family financially while also giving back to the future of medicine, body donation may be an option worth considering. In some programs, accepted donors may have certain final expense costs covered, potentially reducing the financial burden on loved ones.

Every anatomical donation program has its own eligibility requirements and policies, so always check with the specific program before making plans.
