June is Month, a time to honor lives lost to gun violence and raise awareness. 🧡

It is important for families to safely store fi****ms in their homes. Today, fi****ms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States.

🔸 Take preventative action by storing guns locked, unloaded and separate from ammunition. As a firearm owner you can help reduce the number of children who find guns and shoot themselves or someone else.

Our University Health Injury Prevention team has placed pinwheels in the University Hospital garden as a symbol of remembrance and hope for a future free from gun violence. Find more information about gun safety on our website: https://www.universityhealth.com/Services/Trauma/Injury-Prevention/Gun-Safety

👉 Join us. Wear orange every Friday this month, whether it’s a ribbon, earrings, or a small pop of color. Let it be a visible reminder that we care, we remember and we’re committed to change. Together, we can turn awareness into action and build a future free from gun violence.

Today is Memorial Day, described by Army Brigadier General (Ret.) Dr. Shan K. Bagby as a day that calls us all “to recognize the sacrifices that have been made for the freedoms that we enjoy.”

On Friday University Health held a solemn Memorial Day observance, where General Bagby served as keynote speaker.

“As long as we keep these people in our collective memory, the lives that they could have lived go on forever,” Gen. Bagby said. “What we choose to celebrate and honor is a reflection of who we are as a society.”

We’d like to thank the University Health Veterans Committee, which hosts this gathering every year to remember those who lost their lives in defense of the United States.

What’s the harm in a little red dye? KSAT Stephanie Serna reached out to our pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Dina Tom, to discuss why ultra-processed foods marketed to our children are so brightly colored—and what they could be doing to our children.

Adults may not mind food that is plain-looking, “but kids are excited to see something colorful,” Dr. Tom said.

The FDA is urging manufacturers to phase out the use of some food dyes because evidence suggests they may increase behavioral problems in some children, and the EU already requires warning labels on foods containing those dyes.

But it can already be challenging to get kids to steer clear of brightly colored foods with colorful packaging. Dr. Tom recommends prepping snacks ahead, like cut watermelon and cheese.

It’s harder to take something away from a child than to never give it in the first place, she said, and kids can get these foods at lots of places. Pro tip from Dr. Tom: have a talk about the whole family making better food choices, and model it for them. Everybody wins! Catch Dr. Tom’s interview tomorrow morning on Good Morning San Antonio around 6:30 on KSAT 12 & KSAT.com.

Here’s a sneak preview of Dr. Shweta Bansal describing our new cardio-kidney-metabolic (CKM) clinic at the Texas Diabetes Institute.

We recently partnered with KSAT 12 & KSAT.com News for an upcoming Medical Minute highlighting how our specialists are working together to better serve patients living with Type 2 diabetes and related heart and kidney conditions.

By bringing cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, and support services together in one coordinated clinic, we’re reducing barriers to care and improving communication throughout the patient journey.

There’s healing in music, too. 🎶💙

During Health Care Week at University Health, we celebrated the incredible people who bring compassion, skill and heart to their work every single day. Across several locations, our team members enjoyed games, snacks, food trucks, art activities and special gifts — but one of the best parts was the music filling the air.

Whether it was lively mariachis, soothing Latin jazz or DJs that kept the party games going, the sounds brought people together, lifted spirits and created moments of joy and connection in the middle of busy healthcare days. It was a beautiful reminder that healing doesn’t only happen in exam rooms and hospitals — sometimes it happens through laughter, community and a familiar song.

Every team member plays a part in caring for our community, and it was wonderful to see so many people taking time to relax, smile, dance a little and simply feel appreciated.
A huge thank you to our thoughtful HR team for creating such a meaningful celebration for all the people who keep the healing happening. 🙌

May is Stroke Awareness Month 🧠

Do you recognize the signs?

When it comes to stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA, or “mini-stroke”), every second matters. Remember B.E.F.A.S.T.:
- Balance means sudden loss of coordination
- Eyes refers to vision changes
- Face is drooping
- Arm is weakness
- Speech is difficulty speaking
- Time means calling 911 immediately.

👉 Acting quickly can save a life and reduce long-term effects. Take a moment to learn the signs and share this with your family and friends so they’re prepared too.

Last year, San Antonio lost 4 children to hot car deaths. 🚙☀️

With another hot summer approaching, ACT to prevent heatstroke injury and death by never leaving a child alone in a car.

A - Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving a child alone in a car, not even for a minute.

C - Create reminders.
Keep a stuffed animal or other memento in your child’s car seat when it’s empty and move it to the front seat as a visual reminder when your child is in the back seat.

T - Take action.
If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Emergency personnel want you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations.

👉 Our Jennifer Northway and Dr. Marissa Cantu talked to reporters today at the heatstroke awareness press conference—catch the news for more coverage.

How can you tell if a cardiology team is delivering the highest quality care? One key indication: check for nationally recognized accreditations backed by strong patient outcomes.

At University Health’s Cardiovascular Center, we’re proud to have earned the American College of Cardiology’s HeartCARE Center designation — the first program in South Texas to receive this distinction.

🎉“It’s like winning the Super Bowl,” says Executive Director Virginia Travieso. And for good reason. This recognition reflects our meeting rigorous national standards across multiple specialties, as well as excellence in nursing support, patient outcomes, and advanced, minimally invasive procedures.

So, when you see the HeartCARE Center seal at our CVC, it means you can trust you’re receiving comprehensive, high-quality care from a team dedicated to helping patients heal and thrive. ❤️

In the world of organ transplantation one person can save many lives. Robert McDonald was that person. When he offered to donate part of his liver to anyone who needed it, he allowed our liver transplant team to match seven willing donors with compatible patients who needed new livers.

🩺 In this video Dr. Tarunjeet Klair, surgical director of our liver transplant program, says the seven-pair match – the largest in the country – was only possible because University Health Transplant Institute has developed a strong community of living donors. They guided them through every step of the process and delivered outstanding patient results.

04/20/2026

Colon cancer is rising in younger adults. Our Chief of Gastroenterology Dr. Sandeep Patel goes on KSAT 12 & KSAT.com SA Live to tell Jada Pickett why the recommended first screening age has dropped from 50 to 45, and why earlier screening saves lives.

🩺 Dr. Patel notes that many lifestyle patterns are risk factors, and they’re getting more common: we tend to eat lots of processed food, alcohol and red meat, and poor sleep, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are contributors, he said.

👉 The good news is that there’s more screening available than ever before. Not only has the lowering of the recommended screening age made colonoscopies more available, but a primary care provider can also offer other, less invasive screening tests like f***l immunochemical (FIT) and stool DNA tests.

If those tests detect abnormalities, a colonoscopy is recommended. The colonoscopy is the most effective method with the added advantage that pre-cancerous polyps and early cancers can be detected and removed or treated immediately, improving survival and reducing deaths.

“It’s safe, it’s easy and there’s nothing to be nervous about,” Dr. Patel said.

Screening is safe, easy and can prevent colon cancer when caught early. If you’re 45+ or have a family history of colon cancer, talk to your primary care doctor about screening options.

What often is risky is waiting. Take action by using our Colon Cancer Risk Assessment to learn if you are at risk: https://universityhealth.com/colonhealth?hgcrm_channel=mass_media&hgcrm_source=other&hgcrm_agency=client&utm_source=ksat_medical_minute&utm_medium=sponsored_article&utm_campaign=colorectal_cancer_2026&hgcrm_campaignid=25381&hgcrm_tacticid=44931&hgcrm_trackingsetid=64819
