A friendship that became a meaningful gift. When Jose Aguirre was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease, he faced the possibility of dialysis while hoping for a kidney donor. That donor turned out to be someone already close to him: his longtime friend, Marcus Compton.

After learning Jose needed a kidney, Marcus decided to get tested and discovered he was a match. On November 13, 2024, Marcus donated a kidney to his friend.

“My life hasn’t changed much — except that I have a scar to remind me of the difference I made in someone’s life,” Marcus shares. “That’s the real gift.”

Today, Marcus and Jose share their experience to encourage others to learn more about organ donation: https://bit.ly/4hI9DSD.

During National Minority Donor Awareness Month, we recognize stories like theirs and the importance of increasing awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation in multicultural communities. Learn more about our transplant care: https://bit.ly/45B2koA

One of the happiest seasons of Camrynne Brunkenhoefer’s life quickly became one of the hardest. At 23, she had just gotten engaged, found her wedding dress and was preparing to celebrate her 24th birthday. Then came a phone call she never expected: The knee pain she’d been experiencing was Ewing sarcoma.

Suddenly, wedding planning was joined by doctor appointments, chemotherapy and surgery. Camrynne underwent months of chemotherapy before the removal of the tumor and a portion of her femur. She then continued chemotherapy, completing nearly a year of treatment.

Through the uncertainty, Camrynne held tightly to the life waiting for her beyond treatment. She and her husband made plans, dreamed of traveling and looked forward to finally celebrating their wedding.

Then, she got to ring the bell.

“It felt amazing. It felt like, you know, finally, I could get my life back on track and start doing all the things that were put on hold for a year.”

And she did. Camrynne traveled, returned to the things she loved and, in May 2025, celebrated her wedding at the same venue she and her husband had fallen in love with before treatment began.

Looking back, Camrynne says finding joy wherever she could helped carry her through the hardest moments. Her message to others facing a similar journey is simple: “It will get better afterward. You just gotta get through the tough time.”
