We recently came across a situation that, unfortunately, we see very often. As a Surgeon's Assistant, we can follow the surgeon from facility to facility. This allows your surgeon to have the same person with them for all their cases. However, not every facility is as informed on what surgical assistants can and can not do. While each surgical assistant's skill set may vary, they are usually as in tune with their surgeons. This makes for a better surgical outcome. While each medical facility has their own "scope of practice" that we must follow, a Surgical Assistant can do all duties delegated by the surgeon within that scope of practice. I often hear operating personnel wanting to put limitations on our skill set and that can result in false rumors. We are Certified but have the option to move further in our career field. We can be licensed depending on the state and the legislative process.
