Jeanne Jugan understood something profoundly simple:
When we care for someone who is vulnerable, forgotten, or alone, we are caring for Christ Himself.
Born in Brittany, France, Jeanne grew up in a family that knew hardship. As an adult, she began opening her home and her heart to poor elderly people who had nowhere else to go. That quiet act of love eventually grew into the Little Sisters of the Poor, a community devoted to caring for elderly people with dignity and compassion.
She did not see the elderly as burdens.
She saw human beings made in the image of God.
Her life asks us to notice the people our world sometimes overlooks:
the elderly,
the lonely,
the poor,
the homebound,
the forgotten.
Sometimes holiness looks like feeding someone.
Sometimes it looks like listening.
Sometimes it looks like sitting beside a person so they know they are not alone.
Saint Jeanne Jugan, pray for us. Amen.
