As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our National, Humanitarian, Economic, and Political Experiment, we reflect on the vision of a well-educated, rational, and value-laden citizenry. This vision emphasizes the importance of protecting the structure of our Federal Government for our mutual safety, well-being, and agency as self-expressed individuals.

In his 1796 public letter, George Washington cautioned against the dangers of partisanship, rivalries, and revenge, warning that these could lead the people to seek solace in a strong leader, potentially becoming a despot and undermining our liberty.

As American citizens, we have a responsibility to uphold the values of a thoughtful political body that leads from the grassroots level. We are the stewards of the American Experiment, and there should be no need for a “savior” or “Big Brother” to guide us.

On a personal note, I spent the evening watching fireworks with my temporary roommate, who has shown remarkable resilience after two psychiatric hospitalizations earlier this year. Living with schizoaffective disorder, he is now stable and in much better spirits. As a Peer Support Specialist, he embodies the spirit of support and recovery. Together, we can help address homelessness by offering temporary spare bedrooms until individuals can access board and care or residential treatment programs.
