“Root deeply enough in yourself that other people’s opinions become information, not direction.”

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately.

I value other people’s perspectives. I ask questions. I listen. And sometimes I can take in someone else’s opinion so quickly that I lose track of what I actually think or want.

Part of “rooting into myself” right now is learning to pause before I absorb everything around me.

To listen.

To consider.

To stay open.

But also to trust my own intuition.

I don’t think being rooted means shutting other people out or believing we always know best. I think it means knowing ourselves well enough that advice can help us without automatically becoming our direction.

That feels especially important during seasons of change, when there are so many possibilities and so many voices telling us what we could or should do.

Maybe the practice is simply coming back to ourselves again and again.

Root. Connect. Grow.

Those three words came to me in a dream while I was in Maine.

Then, during a sound healing a few days later, I felt my root chakra pulsing with my heartbeat and had this very physical sensation of rooting down into the earth.

The message felt clear:

I need to root.

What wasn’t clear was where.

Did I need a new place to call home? Was I supposed to move? Put down deeper roots where I already am?

Then someone I happened to meet told me something that shifted the question:

Root into yourself.

That one has stayed with me.

My daughters are no longer part of my daily life in the way they were for almost 19 years, and I’m realizing how much of my identity and purpose has been connected to being their mom.

There is grief in that.

And there is possibility.

So maybe rooting into myself right now means figuring out who I am in this new season. What do I need? What do I want? What does my own intuition say?

It means learning to hear other people’s opinions without automatically making them my own.

And it means returning to the things that help me feel grounded—my feet on the earth, meditation, dancing, journaling, the ocean.

In yoga, we root down so we can rise.

Maybe life works that way too.

Maybe rooting isn’t about having everything figured out.

Maybe it’s about becoming grounded enough in ourselves to hear our own voice as we decide what comes next.

What does rooting into yourself look like for you?
