Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, a day to raise awareness about how to prevent su***de. πŸ’™ Talking about emotions is a start.

'Livsviktiga snack' (Vital talks) is a book produced by Swedish non-profit organisation Su***de Zero. It gives tips to parents on how to talk to their children. Here are 5 quick tips from the book:

πŸ’™ Spend more time together. Bake a cake, drive to the gym or go shopping – small talk is a good basis for deeper conversations.

πŸ’™ Find your child's talk time. Many children have a time of day when they are more willing to talk – it can be at bedtime, when eating breakfast or in the bath.

πŸ’™ Listen, listen, listen. Often children just want to talk about their experiences and be heard without a parent's opinions.

πŸ’™ Ask open-ended questions. Instead of asking 'Was school good today?', say 'Tell me, what did you do at school today?'

πŸ’™ Listen to clues. Children rarely talk straight about things that worry them. Instead, they can drop small hints here and there – it's up to you as a parent to pick them up.

❗ If you or anyone you know are struggling with mental health issues, reach out to someone around you, talk to a professional or call a local helpline.

Since we are no mental health professionals, we will unfortunately have to remove comments that include thoughts of suicidal nature.
