850 feet in the air on the New River Gorge Bridge catwalk — and yes, I have a horrible fear of heights and falling. 🫣
But if there’s one thing I keep learning over and over again in both life and business, it’s this: fear cannot be the thing making your decisions for you.
Twenty years ago, it was quitting my corporate job with only one regular client on my books. Then it was cranking the steering wheel 180º on my successful graphic design business to become a pet photographer. Then photographing my first commercial campaign. Then making the conscious choice to leave a steady stream of San Diego-based clients behind to build a business around a dream life of adventure and exploration.
Every major step has come with fear attached to it somewhere. What if this isn’t the right move? What if I fail? What if this doesn’t work?
Here’s the thing, though: growth and fear usually show up holding hands, skipping their way up to you, getting right in your face, and asking, “So, what’s it gonna be???”
But back to the bridge... I was scared on my way there. I was scared to take the first step. But once I got moving, I loved every second of it. The views, the experience, sitting on the edge dangling my feet over the edge... I was exactly where I was supposed to be. And none of that would have happened without looking fear in the face and saying, “Not today, dude. You’re not running my life today.”
(Also, yes, I had a safety harness on! I’m not THAT much of an adrenaline ju**ie! 😆)
