According to Grigos and Case (2018) movement transitions are the “change in articulatory configuration between segments and/or syllables.”

More simply put, it is the transition from one sound to another in a word.

It has been well documented that kids with CAS struggle with this! (Grigos et al., 2015; Nijland et al., 2003a, 2003b)

Grigos and Case (2018) review how current evidence supports that the difficulty with movement transitions is contributing to why kids with CAS are so inconsistent with their errors with prosody, vowels, consonants, articulatory groping etc.

Is it just me?

It takes a lot of effort as a home health SLP to ensure that pieces don’t go missing while I am at other peoples homes.

When thy inevitably do go missing it creates a new communicative opportunity but i try to address them when they happen organically.

Crowe and McLeod (2020) do acknowledge some limitations:

- they used studies from the last 90 years and some changes have occurred dialect and demography of kids learning American English
- the scores could be impacted by the word selection for those tests
- they acknowledge that they were more conservative in their reporting due to the influence of basal and ceiling scores and they reported the youngest data in certain cases, e.g., if a child acquired a sound in the initial position at one age and the medial at another they selected the younger of those

Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST)
1️⃣Prepratice/Training
- Pick 5 words the child is really struggling with from the list of 20 nonsense words
- Give knowledge of performance to build their internal reference of correctness so the child knows “yeah i got that right” or knows what they did inaccurately
2️⃣Practice
- Have the child imitate the 20 different words
- Repeat this 5x to get to 100 words
- Reduce the amount of feedback each time
- Start with high levels of feedback in the first block and then towards the 5th block we only tell them whether or not it was correct or incorrect
