Is the MRI the end all be all when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries? ⠀

To be clear, I refer out for MRI on a regular basis. It’s a valuable tool that help us distinguish between life threatening disease, impingement of the spinal cord, and a commonly herniated disc. I work closely with orthopedic surgeons to make sure we get the best result for the patient. ⠀

On the flip side, it is common for people to come in with shoulder pain, get a diagnosis of labrum tear, and be presented with surgery as the first option. ⠀

When I lived in Alabama, spinal surgery was common practice in the region. I took care of many folx that had segments of their neck fused together, discectomies, and rods put into their spines. ⠀
