Have you had to take the keys away? How did you approach it? What advice do you have for others who will have to do this soon?

There comes a time when it may no longer be safe for our loved ones to operate a vehicle. But it can be a big battle. Driving is deeply ingrained in many of us as part of our freedom and independence. When we want to get away and be alone, we can always hop in our car and go for a drive. Giving it up is like giving up a part of ourselves.

And, it can seem like the final admission that perhaps aging and illness are reaching that tipping point. It can be hard to face.

For all these reasons and more, it is understandably difficult to get an adult to hand over the keys and to stop driving. On the other hand, it simply gets too dangerous, not only for our loved ones but for other people on the road. No matter how hard or difficult, it has to be done.

Someone in our community recently shared with us this great insight, “One of the best things I learned was from hospice. They said the caregiver needs some time away from their loved one. Getting away, even if it is just for an hour or two is very needed and it makes you a better caregiver. You need some time to recharge. It's not selfish, it's needed!”

If you're caring for an aging loved one, you've likely encountered some challenging days. Caregiving for family members is indeed an honor, allowing us to compassionately tend to the needs of our loved ones, but also a demanding journey that tests the limits of our resilience.

We all have our physical and emotional limits, and caregiver burnout is real. There comes a time when we have to admit - we can’t do it all, at least not all the time.

This is where respite care comes in. Respite care is a specialized service designed to provide short-term, temporary relief to the primary caregiver, giving them a chance to rest, recharge, and tend to their personal needs and responsibilities. Whether it's for a few hours, a few days, or longer, respite care offers is a lifeline for caregivers.

Share your experience with us, and learn more in our Definitive Guide to Respite Care!

If you're a caregiver looking for help or support, you've come to the right place. Seniorly explains how respite care can save the day, and gives you everything you need to know about this valuable tool.

How do you connect with your loved one when words fail?

“I have been a volunteer in a care home for dementia sufferers many years, ever since my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I used to go to her care home and play the piano for singalongs. She has since passed away, but I still go and play whenever I can. I’m not a professional musician, but I play easy songs like Coming Round the Mountain and Danny Boy to popular songs from the 50s and 60s.

I find it so uplifting when a resident who can hardly speak a sentence joins in and knows the words and claps along and is having fun. It makes it all worthwhile. And going there, while it is still hard sometime, feels like a way to still connect with Mom all these years later.”

“I'm 48 and I care for my 72 year old mom who has health problems. I also care for my step-dad, who has renal failure, a Cath bag, Parkinson's, limited mobility, etc. I live right down the road from them. I have fibromyalgia, but we all make it work. We live in the middle of nowhere, so I am constantly taking them to several different towns for appointments, hospitals, etc.

I love helping them, but I don't really have any support for me. Other than them, I really have no family to turn to, and no friends to speak of. All I have is my boyfriend as my support system. I have a son and his wife who don't live close, but they have four young kids so they have their hands full.

There are no caregiver support groups close by. What does everyone do for self-care if you don't have a support system?”

What helps your loved one when they’re experiencing sundowning or other dementia symptoms?

“Sundowning” is a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. It’s also known as “late-day confusion” because confusion and agitation may get worse in the late afternoon and evening.

Your loved one is most likely to experience sundowning if they have mid-stage to advanced dementia. It may be a sign that the time is coming where you may need more assistance with them.

What questions do you have about assisted living facilities? Share your thoughts and experience with us.

Assisted living is a type of long-term residential care for seniors who need some help with daily tasks like laundry, transportation, and medication management. Most assisted living facilities offer support with daily activities, as well opportunities for social and recreational activities. There are even places that don't refer to themselves as assisted living which may provide assisted living services. This includes retirement homes, nursing homes, or senior living communities.

Palliative and Hospice care are similar, but different and each may play a role over time. Both are meant to bring comfort and relief, but they differ in some important ways. What has your experience been with this kind of assistance?

Palliative care focuses on relief from physical suffering due to chronic conditions that are not considered to be life-threatening for now. Palliative care can begin from diagnosis through to seeing a cure or remission, and so it definitely makes use of life-prolonging medications. Palliative care uses a multi-disciplinary approach, engaging with highly trained professionals, and takes place in medical settings, not in the home.

Hospice care, on the other hand, is available to terminally ill patients and aims to make the patient comfortable. Hospice prepares the patient and the patient’s family for the patient’s end of life when it is determined treatment for the illness will no longer be pursued. A key distinction is that hospice does not use life-prolonging medications. Hospice relies on a family caregiver and a visiting hospice nurse being involved in the process. Hospice can be offered in the home, in a nursing home, or occasionally, in a hospital.
