Yesterday I had the privilege to work with Oakland Public Library children’s librarians on neurodiversity-affirming storytime practices — as part of my work with First 5 Alameda County.
These librarians don’t just hold storytime in library branches. They bring it to schools across Oakland, reaching thousands of kids every year.
Room for Everyone means rethinking what participation looks like. It’s offering fidgets to all kids. It’s saying “your body needs to move” instead of “sit down.” It’s recognizing that traditional circle time doesn’t work for every brain.
When public spaces are designed for all children, everyone benefits.
Thank you and for investing in this work. Progress, not perfection. 💙
