Pregnant and planning to breastfeed? You don’t have to wait until baby arrives to ask questions, make a plan, and feel more confident about breastfeeding.

A prenatal lactation consult can help you learn about proper positioning, latch, milk production, as well as how and when to pump.

Let the Joy of Nursing create a feeding plan that feels right for you.

Seeing your pediatrician within the first few days of your baby’s life is so important. They’ll check your baby’s weight, monitor for jaundice, and make sure feedings are going well. If there are any breastfeeding concerns, they may refer you to a lactation consultant for additional support.

But you don’t have to wait for a referral — or for a problem to arise. Meeting with a lactation consultant within the first few days after being discharged can help establish a strong feeding plan and set you up to reach your feeding goals from the very beginning.

Birth control while breastfeeding can feel confusing — but it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s the simple breakdown:

Progestin-only methods (like the mini pill, IUD, or implant) are usually recommended because they’re less likely to impact milk supply.

Estrogen-containing options can sometimes reduce supply, especially in the early postpartum phase.

Every body responds differently, which is why personalized support matters.

If you’re navigating this decision, you don’t have to guess — we’ll help guide you so you can make an informed choice with your healthcare provider.

This is one of those questions with a lot of “it depends.”

Some parents benefit from having a pump ready before baby arrives. Others won’t need one right away — or at all in the beginning.

It comes down to your feeding goals, your lifestyle, and how your journey unfolds after birth.

If you’re planning to return to work or are considering exclusively pumping, having a quality double electric pump can be really helpful. You can also check with your insurance during your third trimester — many plans will cover one.

The good news? You don’t have to decide everything upfront. There’s room to adjust as you go, and we’re here to support and guide you through it.

Have you been told you need to stop breastfeeding because of a medication?

Before stopping, know this: many medications are compatible with breastfeeding, and others may have safer alternatives or simple adjustments.

Some medications may require extra review, like certain acne meds, chemotherapy drugs, or radioactive treatments.
Many common medications such as most antibiotics, thyroid meds, pain relievers, asthma inhalers, and some mental health medications — are often safe to use while breastfeeding.

Treating your health matters, and stopping breastfeeding isn’t always necessary. We can help review medications using evidence-based resources so you can make an informed decision.
