Leo is 3. Lily is 2. And already the way we talk about food and bodies feels like one of the most important things I do as a parent.
A few things that completely changed my approach 👇
🌿 Lead by example always. Children eat what they see you eat. Not perfectly, not immediately, but over time, they absorb what is normal. In our house that means green smoothies, avocado toast, fruit all day, beans and broccoli and all the vegetables. Do they have chips sometimes? Yes. So do I. It’s not about perfection. It’s about the foundation.
🌿 We decide what. They decide how much. I grew up being told to finish my plate. I can feel in my body, years later, how deeply that is wired in me. So we do it differently. Leo and Lily eat as much as they want and we trust their little bodies know.
🌿 Food is food - not good or bad. We try hard not to label food as healthy or unhealthy. We are plant-based as a family. Leo asked why, so I explained: we love animals, so we don’t eat them. We call ourselves the turtle team 🐢 The turtle team is kind. The turtle team doesn’t eat animals.
I’m still in the middle of all of it. Figuring it out one meal at a time.
