The Fascial System — The Web That Connects Us
Have you ever wondered how tension in one part of your body can show up as discomfort somewhere completely different?
One piece of that puzzle may be fascia.
Fascia is the continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds and weaves through our muscles, bones, joints, organs, nerves, and other structures throughout the body. Rather than thinking of the body as a collection of separate parts, the fascial system invites us to see it as something beautifully interconnected.
When we move, breathe, stretch, rest, and experience the world around us, our fascia is part of that experience.
Over time, repetitive movement, injury, stress, postural habits, and the ways we adapt to everyday life can influence how freely we move and how tension is distributed throughout the body. Because fascia is interconnected, an area that feels tight or restricted isn't always the whole story. Sometimes it is part of a much larger pattern.
This is one of the reasons I have become so fascinated with myofascial work.
My Journey with Human Garage
I'm excited to share that I am currently in the process of becoming a Human Garage Maneuver Coach.
Human Garage takes a whole-body approach to fascia, movement, breath, and self-care. Their Fascial Maneuvers encourage us to explore the body as an interconnected system rather than focusing only on the place where we feel discomfort. This perspective has been especially meaningful to me because it complements something I have long believed in my own practice: we can create change by working with the body rather than against it.
Another part of the Human Garage philosophy that I find fascinating is the exploration of the emotional body. Within this framework, different organs and areas of the body are associated with different emotional experiences—for example, the liver with anger, the kidneys with fear, the lungs with grief, and the heart with joy, love, and emotional connection. These relationships come from holistic and traditional healing frameworks rather than being established one-to-one relationships in Western medicine, but they offer an interesting invitation to become curious about how our emotional experiences may show up physically.
We already know that our emotional state can influence the body. Think about how your shoulders rise when you're stressed, your jaw tightens when you're frustrated, your stomach reacts when you're nervous, or your entire body softens when you finally feel safe enough to relax.
To me, this is where the conversation becomes especially interesting.
What if instead of viewing physical tension as something we simply need to get rid of, we become curious about it? What has this area been compensating for? What patterns have developed here? What happens when we breathe into it, move differently, or simply give it our attention?
Learning more about the fascial system through my Human Garage training is giving me another lens through which to explore these connections, and I'm excited to continue bringing that knowledge and curiosity into the way I approach bodywork.
A Little Fascial Awareness for August
This month, I invite you to become curious about your own body.
Notice how you stand when you're waiting in line. Notice your breath when you're stressed. Notice whether one shoulder tends to sit higher, whether you always cross the same leg, or whether you hold tension in your jaw without realizing it.
And perhaps go a little deeper: What were you feeling when you noticed that tension?
You don't have to immediately change or analyze what you find.
Start by simply becoming aware.
Our bodies develop patterns for many reasons, and awareness gives us an opportunity to explore them with curiosity rather than force.
The more I learn about fascia, the more I'm reminded of something I see again and again in bodywork:
Everything is connected—body, breath, movement, and emotion.
I'm looking forward to sharing more of what I learn throughout my journey toward becoming a Human Garage Maneuver Coach and exploring new ways we can support greater movement, awareness, and connection within the body.
Here's to moving, breathing, feeling, and listening a little more deeply this August. 🌿
