Most new parents are keen to share the many tasks of caring for their newborn. Feeding baby becomes the natural focus of their new 24/7 "routine" and most new mothers inevitably feel exhausted and overwhelmed by their unique responsibility to breastfeed this perpetually hungry newborn. NEWBY B***Y TRAP #1 - "Dad can feed baby bottles at night so Mum can sleep". Umm - maybe - BUT - Mum needs to be expressing her breasts at the same time to ensure her milk supply is established, and maintained. NewBaby101 HINT - a better plan is for Mum to breastfeed baby, and Dad to take care of nappy changes, burps and settling, PLUS a snack or drink for Mum. It's all about teamwork! New Parents ROCK!!

📣 Breaking news for the doula community which will have major impacts on maternity care.📣

DONA International is proud to endorse "Partnering with Doulas in Clinical Settings," a new Committee Statement released by the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists - ACOG.

This landmark guidance recognizes doulas as valued partners in maternity care and offers a blueprint for strengthening collaboration between doulas, clinicians, and health systems. By fostering mutual respect, communication, and shared commitment to patient-centered care, ACOG outlines a path toward improving both the birth experience and maternal health outcomes.

This Committee Statement and guidelines represent the collaborative work of ACOG's Committee on Advancing Equity in Obstetric and Gynecologic Health Care together with Adetola Louis-Jacques, MD; Rolel Mbaidjol-Kabra, MD; Angela Daniel, MSSW, CLC, BDT/AdvCD (DONA); Lauren A. Graves, CD; and Averjill Rookwood Lacey, CD.

We are grateful to everyone, including our current President-Elect, who contributed their expertise and perspective to this important guidance, which reflects a shared vision for respectful, collaborative, and patient-centered maternity care.

"It was an incredible honor to be part of this committee and to work alongside such dedicated doulas and physician champions who share a commitment to improving maternity care. This guidance demonstrates what is possible when we come together with mutual respect, a shared purpose, and a commitment to keeping birthing persons at the center of every decision." - Angela Daniel

"Partnering with Doulas in Clinical Settings" was endorsed by DONA International, Doula Trainings International, the National Black Doulas Association, and the National Health Law Program (NHeLP).

DONA President, Erica Lane, CD/PCD(DONA), shares what this means for our community.

Doulas tend to gravitate toward the human connection. Able to be a silent observer, a student of nature and a believer in the sacred event of birth. So it is only natural that collaborations come to form. Casco Bay Birthworks moto is “Because we weren’t meant to do it alone” this stands true for the birthing family but also for those in this field of work. I reflect back to a birth where I personally hit a human limit of experiencing a loss of a pregnancy, while supporting a birthing family. Where I realized, I too, was human. I had to leave this family, they were so strong and I knew they were in good hands but it is not a decision a doula ever wants to makes. But, I too was a human, experiencing a real human experience. To have a community to catch you through these times is part of this collaborations goal. A collaborative that Casco Bay Birthworks is proud to be a part of.

Because we weren’t meant to do it alone…any of it.

Today, on and during our 20th anniversary year, we’re honored to receive a Citation from Governor Maura Healey recognizing our work supporting families across Massachusetts. 💙

For 20 years, donor milk has reached babies and families during some of life’s most fragile moments because people continue to show up for one another in extraordinary ways.

We’re grateful to the milk donors, families, healthcare partners, advocates, and supporters who continue to make this work possible.

And special thanks to Elaine Fitzgerald Lewis, PhD, Bureau Director at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, for helping us celebrate this meaningful milestone. ✨
