Can You Catch It? “Amy”

Ever notice your kid can recall every detail of the time a dog barked at them 2 years ago but not what they had for breakfast yesterday?

That's your amygdala at work! This tiny almond-shaped structure tags emotional moments as "important” whether scary or exciting. It locks into memory stronger than everyday ones.

It's necessary for survival, and it's a great thing when it's working accurately. It helps kids learn what to be cautious around, which is an important part of how they learn to keep themselves safe.

But sometimes it can misfire, perceiving simple everyday experiences, like riding a swing or catching a ball as dangerous. When this happens, it can limit a child's willingness to try, explore, and participate in things that are actually safe

At Westchester Physical and Occupational Therapy, PLLC – Sensory Jim™ Pediatric Therapy we are experts at helping kids explore again. Give us a call if your kids amygdala is in overdrive.

Can You Catch It? Brain Facts

Meet your thalamus: The brain's sensory switchboard.

Sight, sound, touch, taste, body position. It all passes through here before reaching your conscious mind and gets sorted by what feels urgent. All expect smell (olfaction).

But here's the catch: when the thalamus flags something as "danger," it can trigger your fight-flight-freeze response before your thinking brain even catches up. The info sent to the frontal cortex can be accurate. or it can be a false alarm.

At Westchester Physical and Occupational Therapy, PLLC – Sensory Jim™ Pediatric Therapy OT helps retrain this loop. The correct movement helps update the neurological map.

Can you Catch It?

Is it Moro?

Jolting awake. Screaming through tummy time. Arching during feeds. Struggling to settle. These aren't just 'baby things,' they can be signs your baby's nervous system is still relying on early reflexes. As pediatric therapists specializing in reflex integration, we educate families about these patterns and support their baby's development. Laying the brain foundation to minimize fright flight fight.

Watch those little boots throw off every step and you'll start to notice a similar pattern in kids who trip, stumble, or seem uncoordinated.

The paws lose proprioceptive input from for the ground, causing an inability for the brain to adjust in real time. Kids dealing with sensory disruptions and retained primitive reflexes face the same disconnect, just less visible than a dog wobbling around in booties.

Their bodies simply aren't getting the feedback needed to move smoothly and that feedback loop has to be rewired, not outgrown.

The right intervention addresses sensory processing differences, core weakness, and reflexes that are still communicating like they did in infancy, even after years of therapy that never touched the root cause. When that's the case, come see us at Westchester Physical and Occupational Therapy, PLLC - Sensory Jim™ Pediatric Therapy know just how to help your child.
