Need a break?

The first weeks of a new school year can be a lot.

Teachers are back in classrooms, giving their energy all day. Parents are juggling new schedules, activities, homework and earlier mornings. And sometimes by Friday evening, you’re simply tired.

This Friday, give yourself two hours when no one needs anything from you.

Come get comfortable, close your eyes and let the soothing tones and vibrations of crystal singing bowls fill the room. We’ll begin with a gentle guided meditation and then settle into a deeply restful sound experience.

Nothing to accomplish. Nothing to keep track of. Nowhere else you need to be.

Just rest.

Sometimes the best classes are the ones that don’t go according to plan.

This morning, I had the privilege of sharing yoga with the first through fifth graders at Empowering Families’ summer program. The room was alive with the beautiful chaos of childhood—a large gymnasium, a loud fan, basketballs bouncing, breakfast being served, conversations happening in every corner.

For a moment, I wondered how we would ever settle in.

Then we simply began.

We gathered in a circle and came home together.

Home to our hearts.
Home to our breath.
Home to our bodies.

The noise around us didn’t disappear, but it no longer mattered.

Together we wandered across an imaginary prairie. We greeted the morning sun, became an eagle soaring on the wind, stretched out like a snake basking on a warm rock, crouched like a coyote and howled to our fellow coyotes, grew into a prairie tree with roots deep in the earth and branches reaching for the sky, then became Dome Rock—steady, strong, and unmoving. Finally, we rested before rising again to frolic across the prairie like playful fairies.

Children have a beautiful way of reminding us that imagination isn’t something we leave behind as we grow older. It’s a doorway back to wonder.

After class, I offered hugs to anyone who wanted one. One by one, the kids—and even a few teachers—came forward with open arms. Those simple embraces felt like little blessings.

Experiences like this remind me why I love sharing yoga beyond the studio walls. Instead of asking children to move faster, perform more, and pay attention to everything outside themselves, we can offer them something different. We can remind them that they can always come home—to their breath, to their heart, and to their body. That kind of knowing is a gift they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Thank you, Empowering Families, for trusting me with your wonderful first through fifth graders this morning. My heart came home, too.

The Long Way Home
By Lisa Betz-Marquez

The heat has been relentless.

People are quick to anger. Patience feels distant. Grace, often nowhere to be found.

Lately, I’ve sensed a crackling in the air.

Whether it’s the heat, economic uncertainty, politics, or something else entirely, I couldn’t say. It’s something I’ve noticed.

Lately, life has been quietly reminding me that what matters most is often found in the smallest moments.

My mom broke her wrist a couple of months ago. Thankfully, she’s healing well, but the experience reminded me that the people we love become more precious with every passing year. Ordinary afternoons together have become something to savor instead of something to assume.

I’ve been thinking about Heartsong, too. About the atmosphere I’m creating. I hope the room itself holds a quiet presence that invites a slower breath, a softening of shoulders, and a quiet setting down of whatever the day has asked us to carry.

This morning, before the heat settled over everything, I sat on the porch with my coffee. Two rabbits bounded through the grass, taking turns leaping over one another. The birds were singing. The bluffs were there, as they have been for thousands of years. Before long, Patches curled into my lap, claiming his dose of love.

Despite the world’s concerns—the economy, the climate, the politics—the birds are singing. The bluffs are there. Patches wants his dose of love. The rabbits are playing, reminding me that no matter what is taking place around me, there is room for playfulness.

Sometimes delight is reason enough to carry us home to our hearts.
