Notice → Pause → Orient → Feel → Choose.
If your nervous system has spent years anticipating, protecting, scanning, fixing, controlling, pleasing, shutting down or preparing for what might happen next, those responses can become incredibly automatic.
So how do we begin changing them?
We practice creating a little bit of space.
NOTICE
What is happening in my body? Tight chest? Racing heart? Clenched jaw? Heat? Restlessness? Racing thoughts?
PAUSE
Before reacting, take a breath. Maybe place a hand over your heart. Give yourself a moment.
ORIENT
Feel your feet. Look around you. Notice where you actually are.
Am I physically safe right now?
Is something dangerous actually happening — or does this moment feel familiar to my nervous system?
FEEL
Allow the emotion to be there.
Regulation isn’t about making ourselves stop feeling.
We can feel anger, fear, sadness, anxiety or discomfort without requiring that emotion to dictate what happens next.
CHOOSE
What response feels aligned with who I am today rather than what I once needed to do to protect myself?
This is one of the reasons integration is such an important part of ketamine-assisted healing.
Ketamine may temporarily increase neuroplasticity and loosen our reliance on familiar pathways.
Then we practice.
Again and again, we give the brain and body a different experience:
I can feel uncomfortable and still be safe.
I can pause.
I don’t have to react immediately.
I have choices.
Over time, the pathway we’ve traveled a thousand times doesn’t have to be the one we automatically take.
There are other roads available to us.
Ketamine can help create the opening.
Integration is where we begin learning how to walk a different path. 🤍
