# Summer Heat Got You Feeling Tight? ☀️

If you've noticed more muscle tightness, cramping, or nagging neck and back discomfort during the Arizona summer, you're not imagining it. Extreme heat can affect how your body feels in several ways.

# # # Why does the heat make muscles feel tighter?

**💧 Dehydration**
High temperatures increase fluid loss through sweating. Even mild dehydration can contribute to muscle fatigue, cramping, and feelings of stiffness because muscles don't function as efficiently when they're low on fluids.

**🪑 More time sitting indoors**
When temperatures climb above 100°F, many of us spend more time inside—working at a computer, driving, or relaxing on the couch. Less movement and prolonged sitting can contribute to neck, shoulder, and low back stiffness.

**😴 Poor sleep**
Hot nights can make it harder to get quality sleep. When your body doesn't get enough restorative rest, muscles recover more slowly and pain sensitivity may increase, leaving you feeling tighter the next day.

**🏌️ Weekend activities**
Summer doesn't stop us from enjoying Arizona! Yard work, hiking, golfing, pickleball, swimming, and home projects can all place extra demands on your muscles—especially in 105–115°F temperatures. Muscle fatigue and overuse may leave you feeling sore or stiff afterward.

"Different types of Chiros"
Although many people think of chiropractic care simply as "popping" joints to reset the nervous system, there are actually many different philosophies and treatment approaches within the chiropractic profession.
So, what is actually happening during a chiropractic adjustment?
Most chiropractors aim to reduce muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and decrease spinal stiffness caused by poor posture, repetitive movements, injuries, stress, or everyday wear and tear. A common adjustment involves applying a quick, controlled force to a joint, known as a high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust.
During an adjustment, you may hear or feel a popping sound. This sound is generally believed to be caused by the rapid formation and collapse of tiny gas bubbles within the joint fluid, a process called cavitation. The sound itself is not bones "cracking" or moving back into place.
An adjustment also stretches the surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joint capsule while improving joint movement. This mechanical movement stimulates nerve receptors that send signals to the brain and central nervous system, which may help reduce muscle tension, decrease pain, and improve movement. Many patients also experience increased range of motion and a feeling of greater flexibility following treatment. The body's natural pain-relieving chemicals, such as endorphins, may also contribute to these effects.
Chiropractors use a variety of techniques. Some perform traditional manual adjustments using their hands, while others utilize gentler mobilization techniques or specialized adjusting instruments designed to improve joint motion with less force.
Some chiropractors believe that restoring normal joint motion and reducing mechanical stress on the spine can improve the function of the nervous system by reducing irritation around spinal joints and the tissues surrounding the spinal nerves. Others focus primarily on improving biomechanics, reducing pain, restoring mobility, and helping patients return to their normal daily activities.
Additional treatments may include spinal decompression or flexion-distraction therapy, which are designed to reduce pressure on the intervertebral discs and improve spinal mobility. Chiropractors also commonly evaluate and treat conditions involving nerve irritation or muscle dysfunction, such as sciatica, piriformis syndrome, cervical radiculopathy, tension headaches, and other musculoskeletal conditions.
Ultimately, chiropractic care is individualized. Treatment plans are based on each patient's history, examination findings, diagnosis, and personal goals, with the objective of reducing pain, improving function, and helping patients maintain an active, healthy lifestyle.
When choosing a chiropractor, look for a provider whose treatment approach aligns with your preferences and with whom you feel comfortable and confident. It is also helpful to establish a few measurable health and functional goals so you can evaluate your progress over time. Acute injuries are often managed differently than chronic conditions, but regardless of the condition being treated, many patients experience meaningful relief and improved function through individualized chiropractic care.

1. The human body has around 206 bones but only the hyoid bone is not touching any other bone and the 3 ear bones are the smallest ones.

2. There are over 600 muscles in your body that help you move and support the skeleton, the largest is gluteus maximus, your butt.

3. Speaking of muscles, the word ‘muscle’ comes from Latin, meaning “little mouse”, which the Romans thought a flexed bicep resembled.

4. There are 33 bones in your spinal cord but only 31 pairs of spinal nerves + 12 more in your brain (cranial nerves).

5. Information travels along these nerves at ~ 400 kilometers / 249 miles per hour, pretty darn quick – especially reflexes.

6. Your ears and nose will continue to grow throughout your whole life due to being made from lots of cartilage.

7. Your hearing and vision will decrease, but your nose can remember 50,000 different scents. It’s the first cranial nerve in mammals, not as powerful as a dog, but still pretty impressive!

8. Your brain is mostly fat and doesn’t feel pain; the skin on your elbow (‘wenis’) doesn’t feel much pain or pressure (pinch it now).

9. Your spine should have a nice S sharped curve – when it straightens out, it can cause more compression and pain – 80% of people will experience some type of back pain in their lives.

10. Laid end to end, an adults blood vessels could circle the Earth’s equator 4 times (unless the Earth is flat 😊) and blood makes up 8% of your body weight – but I wouldn’t try to remove either as a diet plan.

Chiropractic / Chiropractor - translates from Greek to 'done by hand' - and we do use our hands quite often to pop, push, and pull on people, but can also use various tools or other modalities on bones, joints and soft tissues to lessen discomfort. The focus and/or attention by most chiros is really on the CNS (spinal cord and brain), which they affect with motion, mobility, manual work, and manipulations.

"Fun Fact Friday"
Out of all the 206 bones in your body, only 1 does not have an articulation with any other bone. Some of you, especially those who love watching murder shows, may already know if it is injured it may denote foul play (strangled). It is often the answer to many anatomy trivia questions for body factoids. the HYOID bone.
