There’s something incredibly powerful about working with a therapist who truly understands how meaningful communication support can be. 💛

Ash Ryan, SLP-CF, brings both professional training and personal experience into their work. As someone who received speech therapy as a child, they understand firsthand how important it is for children to feel heard, supported, and confident in their communication.

Ash takes a gentle, neurodiversity-affirming approach to therapy and loves incorporating movement, play, creativity, and each child’s unique interests into sessions. They especially enjoy supporting early language development, social communication, articulation, stuttering, and apraxia.

Their goal? Helping children feel respected, cared for, and excited about their progress. ✨

We’re so excited to have Ash as part of the team at Lake Stevens Speech Language & AAC!

You don’t have to know the whole AAC system to start.

Start with:
• One word
• One moment
• One attempt

It’s okay to search.

It’s okay to get it wrong.

If your child is dysregulated…
they’re not going to be able to communicate effectively.

And that’s not a behavior problem.

That’s a nervous system need.

Try:
• Pausing expectations
• Co-regulating
• Creating safety first

✨ Regulation always comes before communication.

This is your reminder to slow down and meet your child where they are.

Want to build your child’s language at home?

Try this simple shift 👇

Instead of asking lots of questions…

➡️ Start commenting on what they’re doing.

Example:
❌ “What’s that?”
✅ “It’s a tall tower!”

Why it works:
• Reduces pressure
• Models language
• Keeps interaction natural
• Lays the groundwork for an intrinsic motivation to communicate

✨ Connection first. Language follows.

Try this today and tell us how it goes!

This is one of the biggest myths we hear.

AAC does NOT prevent speech.

It supports communication — and can even helps language grow.

✨ Every child deserves a way to be understood.

When a child repeats words or phrases, they’re not “just scripting.”

They may be:
💬 Expressing a need
💬 Processing language
💬 Participating in connection
💬Self-regulating

Instead of asking, “How do we stop this?”

Try asking, “What might they be communicating?”

“My child is communicating… I just didn’t know how to listen yet.”

This is something we hear all the time 💛

Communication doesn’t always look like words.

It can look like:
• Gestures
• Sounds
• Scripts
• AAC
• Movement
• Eye gaze

When we shift how we listen, everything changes.

✨ Your child is already communicating. We can help you understand how and how to build on that. Reach out for a consult.

You don’t have to do everything perfectly to support your child’s communication.

You just have to:
• Be present
• Stay curious
• Follow their lead

The small moments matter more than the “perfect” strategy.

💛 You are already doing more than you think.

Save this for the days you’re second-guessing yourself.

There is no one “right” way to communicate.

When we expand how we listen, we expand how children are seen, heard, and supported 🌿
