THIS S**T HAS GOT TO STOP.
I have spent my career taking care of people. And as a woman, a healthcare provider, and someone who has a business largely built around women, I cannot read about what happened at the Cornell fraternity house without feeling absolutely fu***ng furious.
I don't know every fact of this case. That's for investigators prosecutors and the court to determine.
But I do know this:
A woman who is unconscious cannot consent.
A woman who's incapacitated cannot consent.
Being intoxicated is not an invitation.
Being drugged is not consent.
We have to stop teaching women how to avoid being r***d and start teaching men how not to r**e.
Yes, teach women to watch the drink.
Yes, teach women to stay together.
Yes, teach women to trust their instincts and have an escape plan.
But more importantly - we must teach our sons:
if she can't consent, you don't touch her.
If she's too intoxicated to make a decision, you don't take advantage of her.
If your friend is doing something wrong, you intervene.
If someone is being drugged, you get help.
And if woman says no – or cannot say yes – you stop.
And to the men who witness this kind of behavior:
You do not have to be the one committing the assault to be part of the solution.
Be the friend who stops it.
Be the friend who gets her home safely.
Be the friend who calls for help.
Be the friend who refuses to laugh at the disgusting group chat.
Better yet- be the friend who calls the police.
Let them know this is not OK.
Because the silence protects perpetrators.
Looking the other way protects perpetrators.
"Boys will be boys" protects perpetrators.
And protecting a fraternity, a reputation, a friendship, career or an institution at the expense of a woman's safety is simply unacceptable.
At Ageless, we believe women when they come forward.
We will talk about consent.
We will protect each other.
Consent is informed, enthusiastic, and ongoing.
And it can be withdrawn at anytime.
We deserve better.
And we demand better.
