Behind the Capes Podcast

Behind the Capes Podcast We’re two longtime friends turned medical moms sharing what life really looks like behind the capes — real talk, raw moments, and big joy.

Because raising a medically complex child takes more than strength — it takes community, connection, and honesty.

💛 “We’re going home.”

Four words that can mean so much more when you’ve spent days, weeks, or even months waiting to hear them.

Going home after a hospital stay.
Going home after a procedure.
Going home after a scary diagnosis.
Going home knowing you made it through another hard chapter.

For some families, going home isn’t just the end of an admission.

It’s a celebration.
It’s relief.
It’s hope.
It’s HOME. 🏠💛

To the parents who have celebrated getting to go home like it was a holiday…
We see you. 💛

✨ What’s a “we’re going home!” moment you’ll never forget? Tell us about it below. Let’s celebrate those homecoming victories together. ❤️

💙 Week 8 — THERAPISTS

Behind Every Cape

❤️ This week: THERAPISTS.

To the therapists…

The ones who celebrate the first tiny step, the new sound, the improved movement, the new skill, and every little bit of progress along the way.

The ones who turn hard work into play.

The ones who push when our kids need a challenge—and know when they need a break.

The ones who see a goal that feels impossibly far away and help us find the tiny steps that get us there.

OTs. PTs. SLPs. Feeding therapists. And every other therapist who works alongside our families…

You help our superheroes discover what they’re capable of.

Thank you for cheering for the milestones, believing in the potential, and walking alongside our families through the process.

Thank you for being part of the story behind the cape. 💙

Tag a therapist who has made a difference for your superhero.

💛 MILESTONE MONDAY 💛

Sometimes one word can say so much.

Maybe your child’s journey feels hopeful.
Maybe it’s challenging.
Maybe joyful, unpredictable, exhausting, exciting, courageous, messy, beautiful… or something completely different.

There’s no right answer. Every journey looks different, and every season comes with its own story. ❤️

✨ If you had to choose ONE word to describe your child’s journey right now, what would it be?

Drop your word in the comments. And if you feel like sharing, tell us a little bit about why you chose it. 💛

Because every journey is different, and every milestone matters here. ❤️

💛 At some point, your child’s care team starts sounding like an entire phonebook.

Cardiology.
Pulmonology.
GI.
Neurology.
Genetics.
PT.
OT.
SLP.

You know who they are. What they do. When the next appointment is. And sometimes even what they’re going to ask before they walk through the door.

It’s a world of knowledge you never expected to learn—but you learned it because your child needed you to.

To the parents who know the names of more specialists than they ever expected to…
We see you. 💛

✨ How many specialists are currently part of your child’s village? Or what’s the most unexpected specialty you’ve found yourself learning about? Tell us below! ❤️

September is NICU Awareness Month. 💙

For me, NICU isn’t just something I know about or something I’ve learned about through this community. It became part of my story.

Kyrian spent the first 87 days of his life in the NICU. Those days changed me, changed our family, and became a part of the story we carry with us.

But I know our story is just one of thousands.

This month, we’re honoring the babies who fought, the parents who stayed, the families who learned a whole new language overnight, and the NICU stories that families carry long after they leave those hospital doors.

To every NICU family: we see you. 💙

And if your NICU story looks different from ours—whether your baby spent hours, days, weeks, or months there; whether they came home or their story ended differently—your story matters, too.

💛 From one NICU mom to all the families who have walked those halls: you are not alone.

💙 Week 7 — TEACHERS

Behind Every Cape

❤️ This week: TEACHERS.

To the teachers…

The ones who see our child as a child first.

The ones who learn how they communicate, how they learn, what makes them laugh, what frustrates them, and what helps them succeed.

The ones who celebrate progress that might look small to someone else—but feels HUGE to us.

The ones who adapt, advocate, encourage, and make space for our kids to be exactly who they are.

Thank you for seeing possibilities when others might only see limitations.

Thank you for celebrating the victories.

And thank you for helping our superheroes discover just how much they are capable of.

Thank you for being part of the story behind the cape. 💙

💛 MILESTONE MONDAY 💛

Some of the biggest milestones aren’t about what our children can do—they’re about what our families have made it through together.

The appointments. The unexpected turns. The hard days. The moments when you weren’t sure how you were going to keep going… and somehow, you did.

Maybe it was a medical challenge, a major transition, a difficult diagnosis, or something that only your family truly understands.

✨ What’s a challenge your family has overcome together?

You don’t have to share every detail. Sometimes simply saying “We made it through” is a milestone worth celebrating. ❤️

Tell us your story below, and let’s remind each other just how strong we can be when we face the hard things together. 💛

Because every milestone matters here. ❤️

💛 You learn pretty quickly that sometimes the most important question is the one you almost didn’t ask.

“Is this normal?”
“Could there be another explanation?”
“What happens if we wait?”
“What are our other options?”
“Can you explain that one more time?”

You learn to speak up. To ask again. To dig a little deeper.

Not because you think you know more than the professionals—but because you know your child.

To the parents who have learned to ask the questions no one else thinks to ask…
We see you. 💛

✨ What’s a question you asked that ended up making a difference for your child? Share it below. Your question might help another parent realize they’re allowed to ask, too. ❤️

🚨 ELMO IS TALKING ABOUT TUBE FEEDING!!! 🚨

Okay, this makes our medical-mom hearts SO happy. 🥹❤️

For families who have lived the tube-feeding life, you know how big this is. Feeding tubes can be such a normal part of our kids’ lives, but they’re not something we see talked about nearly enough—especially in the things our kids LOVE.

And now ELMO is singing about it. ❤️

Representation matters. Normalization matters. And seeing something that was once such a huge part of our kids’ medical stories represented by a character they know and love? That matters. 🥹

As two moms who have been through the tube-feeding journey, we absolutely LOVE this. 🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️

Go watch it—and maybe turn it up REALLY loud. 🎶❤️
