MULLEIN (Verbascum thapsus)

Verbascum is derived from the Latin barbascum
(‘bearded’) — though its scruff is peach fuzz-soft, like talcum;
Thapsus is a village in fragrant Tunisia,
known for its medicaments through ancient Phoenicia.

The common name Mollis refers to its velvet leaves,
as soft and supple as Nature conceives;
known in medieval times as ’flannel flower’,
t’was a soothing washcloth in the bath or shower.

Soldiers of Rome dipped the plant in Tallow
to make torches to light their billets; and for the Figato
(liver) Mullein roots were decocted and taken
whenever their gall was rancid and fading.

“Verbascum with the golden flowers”,
wrote Pliny, has both soothing renewing powers —
for a sore cough and broken-winded presentation
every Green physician should employ its persuasion

Lasty, Dioscorides, of classical fame,
wrote of Mullein under it most ancient Greek name:
Phlomos, “flame” — referring again to its use as a wick.
I’m ‘lit-up’ to think that a torch could heal the sick!
Mullein is golden, soft and downy —
a love charm, too, to bring true hearts bounty. 💚
