Sometimes we’re looking in all the wrong places.

We search for happiness in success, possessions, recognition, relationships, or the hope that “someday” everything will finally fall into place.

But happiness isn’t something we stumble upon. It’s something we build.

It’s found in gratitude for what we have. In choosing hope over fear.
In extending kindness when it’s easier to criticize. In finding purpose, even in difficult seasons.

Life won’t always be easy, but every day gives us a choice.

We may not control our circumstances, but we can control our attitude, our effort, and our response.

Stop waiting for happiness to find you.

Create it. Nurture it. Share it.

Because the happiest people aren’t always the ones with the best circumstances—they’re often the ones who have learned to make the best of the circumstances they have.

💛 Choose joy. Choose gratitude. Choose to create the life you want, one day at a time.

Healing begins with one conversation.

Life doesn’t come with an instruction manual.

Sometimes anxiety becomes overwhelming.
Sometimes grief changes everything.
Sometimes families struggle to communicate.
Sometimes children quietly carry burdens no one else can see.

The truth is, asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s one of the bravest decisions you’ll ever make.

At the Center for Psychological Health & Wellness, we meet people exactly where they are—with compassion, understanding, and evidence-based care designed around their unique journey.

You don’t have to have all the answers.
You just have to take the first step.

Mental health challenges rarely begin with a request for therapy.

Instead, they often first appear in pediatric offices, primary care practices, schools, family law offices, emergency departments, workplaces, community agencies, and social service organizations. The professionals working in these settings are uniquely positioned to recognize the earliest warning signs of emotional distress—often before individuals or families realize they need specialized support.

Research consistently demonstrates that early identification and timely intervention improve outcomes, reduce long-term healthcare costs, strengthen families, improve academic and occupational functioning, and decrease the likelihood that concerns will escalate into crises.

This guide was developed to help referral partners recognize common behavioral health indicators, understand when a referral is appropriate, and learn how collaborative care can improve outcomes for the individuals and families we collectively serve.

Why Early Referral Matters:
Mental health conditions are among the most common health concerns affecting children and adults.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health:
•Nearly one in five adults experiences a mental illness each year.
•Anxiety disorders remain the most common mental health condition.
•Approximately one in six children experiences a diagnosable mental health disorder.
•Many individuals wait years before receiving appropriate treatment.

The earlier intervention begins, the better the outcomes.
Early treatment can help:

• Prevent worsening symptoms
• Improve family functioning
• Reduce emergency department utilization
• Improve school attendance
• Increase workplace productivity
• Reduce caregiver stress
• Strengthen coping skills before crises develop

Recognizing Early Warning Signs:

In Children
Behavioral health concerns often present differently than many expect. Common warning signs include:

•Frequent stomachaches or headaches without medical explanation
•Declining academic performance
•Withdrawal from friends
•Excessive worry
•Irritability
•Sleep disturbances
•Emotional outbursts
•Difficulty concentrating
•School refusal
•Changes in appetite
•Regression in previously mastered skills

These behaviors may indicate anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, adjustment difficulties, or emotional dysregulation rather than "acting out."

In Adolescents
Teenagers frequently express emotional distress through behavior rather than words. Potential indicators include:

• Isolation
• Persistent sadness
• Increased irritability
• Academic decline
• Substance experimentation
• Changes in sleep
• Risk-taking behaviors
• Family conflict
• Self-esteem concerns
• Excessive perfectionism
• Social withdrawal

Many adolescents benefit significantly from therapy before these concerns interfere with education, relationships, or future success.

In Adults
Behavioral health concerns may appear as:

• Chronic stress
• Anxiety
• Burnout
• Depression
• Difficulty managing life transitions
• Caregiver fatigue
• Marital conflict
• Workplace difficulties
• Grief
• Sleep disruption
• Persistent worry
• Emotional exhaustion

Adults frequently seek help only after symptoms begin affecting work, family, or physical health.

Special Considerations for Families
Family systems play a significant role in emotional wellness. Referral may be appropriate when families experience:

• High-conflict parenting
• Divorce adjustment
• Blended family transitions
• Parent-child communication breakdowns
• Behavioral concerns
• Attachment difficulties
• Trauma
• Caregiver burnout
• Parenting stress

Supporting the entire family often produces stronger and more sustainable outcomes than treating one individual in isolation.

Behavioral Health Is Healthcare

Mental health and physical health are inseparable. Untreated behavioral health concerns can contribute to:

• Poor medication adherence
• Increased emergency room utilization
• Chronic pain
• Cardiovascular disease
• Diabetes complications
• Sleep disorders
• Reduced quality of life

Likewise, chronic medical conditions frequently contribute to anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, and caregiver stress.

Integrated, collaborative care benefits everyone involved. When Should You Refer?

Consider referral when:

✓ Symptoms persist beyond several weeks
✓ Daily functioning is impaired
✓ School or work performance declines
✓ Family relationships become increasingly strained
✓ Emotional distress interferes with medical treatment
✓ Individuals report feeling overwhelmed
✓ Significant life changes create adjustment difficulties
✓ Trauma is suspected
✓ Parents express concern regarding emotional or behavioral development

Early referrals often require fewer interventions and lead to better long-term outcomes.

What Referral Partners Can Expect

At the Center for Psychological Health & Wellness, we believe collaborative care produces the strongest outcomes. Referral partners can expect:

•Timely scheduling whenever possible
•Evidence-based treatment
•Collaborative communication (with appropriate client authorization)
•Respect for the referring professional's role
•Comprehensive evaluations when clinically indicated
•Personalized treatment planning
•Family-centered care
•Ethical, confidential practice

We value ongoing communication and partnership throughout the treatment process.

Building Stronger Communities Through Collaboration

Every physician, educator, attorney, social worker, nurse practitioner, counselor, and community professional can change the trajectory of someone's life simply by recognizing when additional support may be beneficial.

Mental health treatment works best when healthcare providers, schools, families, and community organizations work together.

By identifying concerns early and connecting individuals with appropriate behavioral health resources, referral partners help reduce suffering, strengthen resilience, and improve outcomes that extend far beyond the therapy office.

Together, we create healthier children, stronger families, and more resilient communities.
