Sometimes people who spend their lives helping others forget that helplessness is one of the hardest emotions to sit with. During a recent supervision session, I shared this with a coach:

We can solve problems.

We can coach.

We can teach.

We can prescribe.

We can support.

Helplessness offers no clear action step. No checklist. No solution to implement.

It simply asks us to sit with what we cannot change.

When that feeling becomes uncomfortable, the nervous system often starts looking for comfort.

Sometimes it is food.

Sometimes it is alcohol.

Sometimes it is shopping, scrolling, overworking, or staying busy.

The coping strategy is rarely the real story.

The real story is often the pain underneath it.

So when someone is reaching for a way to soothe themselves, I find myself less interested in the behavior and more interested in the feeling driving it.

The question is rarely, “Why can’t I stop?”

The deeper question is:

“What part of me is grieving right now?”

I hear it more and more, “I’m searching for a new_______ doctor. People are getting pickier with their team of health practitioners. They want Doctor’s who have open minds, are willing to listen and cater to the person in front of them rather than tell them what to do. I am loving this!
I’ve lost count of how many times my patients told me their doctor made them cry, or didnt listen, or said the couldn’t do anything for them because their labs came back normal, even though their symptoms were clearly showing their thyroid medication needed to be lowered. I love that people are taking their healthcare back in their own hands and choosing a team who gets that treatment is so much more than lab values, it’s the whole person in front of them! Choose wisely my friends, make sure the experts make your comfort, goals and well-being as much a priority as you do!

PS something very exciting is coming. I will be joining forces with a team who totally gets the patient-first mentality! Stay tuned over the next few weeks for more info!

We are less than three weeks away from graduating the most incredible group of life coaches! I have not made this Training easy for them. They have had to face some of the toughest case examples and hone their skills!

Now it’s time to finish their coaching requirements and that requires a recorded coaching session. The session is completely confidential and will be deleted after supervision.

It is hard enough to feel understood by one person. That alone takes patience, conversation, and emotional work. Expecting instant agreement from larger groups only adds more friction.

The shift happens when we stop expecting alignment and start valuing understanding. Curiosity softens defensiveness. Dialogue expands perspective. Even when agreement never comes, the willingness to understand changes the entire interaction.
