For many years, I lived inside an assumption I never consciously chose. Because there was a real possibility I had inherited Huntington’s Disease from my mother, I quietly believed something about my life:

I wasn’t allowed to dream too large.

If my time might be shorter than most, and if the final years of my life could include profound disability, then perhaps it made sense to live carefully. To keep my ambitions modest. To avoid reaching too far.

I even had thoughtful explanations for why that was reasonable.

But beneath those explanations lived a deeper belief: there wouldn’t be enough room—or enough time—for me to fully become myself.

In the second issue of my newsletter Remembering What We Know, I explore how assumptions like these quietly shape the lives we live.

Because many of the forces guiding our decisions are not external circumstances.

They are the invisible beliefs we have absorbed about what is possible for us.
And sometimes the first step toward reclaiming our lives is simply noticing the stories we’ve been living inside.
