What happens if chemicals splash in your eyes?

1. Don’t panic. IMMEDIATELY flush the eyes with clean water (or saline solution) for 15-20 minutes. Be sure to hold the eyelids open and DO NOT rub! Even opening your eyes under a gentle shower is a good idea.

2. Remove contact lenses and seek emergency care. Call our office (or the emergency room if after hours) prior to going in.

There are different types of chemical burns:

Alkaline Burns: Common in drain cleaners, lye, and bleach; these are very severe and require longer, thorough, and immediate flushing.

Acidic Burns: Found in battery acid and pool cleaner, they tend to damage the surface but can still cause blindness.

Irritants: Soap or sunscreen requires shorter flushing (5-10 minutes). Jalapeño peppers are also a common eye irritant.

When it comes to your eyes, quick action matters.

Even within the same family, iris colors can vary so much. Genetics play a big role, and a fun fact: blue eyes are typically a recessive trait, which means they can show up in unexpected ways from generation to generation.

It’s a simple reminder that no two eyes are exactly the same, and that’s what makes them so special.

Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which sits behind the iris and pupil. Think of it like a window that gradually becomes frosted or foggy over time.

Q: Are cataracts easy to fix?
The good news is that cataracts are very treatable. When they start interfering with daily activities, surgery can remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial one. It’s one of the most common and successful surgeries performed today, usually done as an outpatient procedure with excellent results.
