Jane shares how the U-Step has helped her husband Thurlin, who has PSP, stay active and continue doing the things they love together:
“My husband Thurlin and I have been married over 50 years and love to stay active in the community, whether it be a restaurant on Fridays, outdoor concerts or walks.
Thurlin, though, had been diagnosed with PSP, which affected his balance and mobility. He had been using a regular walker outside the house, but as he was prone to fall backwards, the walker didn’t help – in fact, several times he just held on to me and we just dragged the walker home.
We met with Thurlin’s neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Siddiqui, and he prescribed the U-Step walker for Thurlin. Insurance covered some of the cost and we paid the remainder out of pocket.
Simply put, the U-Step has been life changing! It is an amazing walker and very stable. Thurlin was quickly able to learn using the U-Step’s reverse braking so that he could start and stop when he pleased. We go to Ohio University for exercise classes twice per week and to the hospital once a week for their exercise class.
We also purchased the Laser and Metronome module. As Thurlin had tended to take small steps, the laser shows a red line on the ground like a target to encourage him to take longer strides. The metronome’s clicking also helps provide a rhythm for Thurlin to take consistent steps.
Thurlin uses the U-Step throughout our house as well as outdoors. I am able to fold and load the U-Step into our Honda CRV so that Thurlin can walk safely wherever we go. In fact, we’re planning on taking the U-Step on a 3-month vacation.
We are grateful for the U-Step as it enables us to continue the active lifestyle we want.”
