Look at the beautiful color of this fireweed!

New Photo: Fireweed mid-season

Food uses: The spring sprouts are nutritious and can be eaten raw, steamed, put in a stir-fry, or prepared like you would asparagus. The young leaves can also be used in salads. The inner part of the stalk, called the pith is supposed to be quite sweet and is a nice snack while hiking or camping. A lot of people will make fireweed jelly out of the petals.

Medicinal uses: Fireweed tea can be helpful for constipation. A cooled decoction of the whole plant can be used for coughs. Topically, fireweed extract is good for skin abrasions, eczema, psoriasis, and insect bites.

Cautions: The tea can have a laxative effect, so drink in carefully, unless that's what you're using it for.
