In 2024, American Foundation for Su***de Prevention, The National Alliance for Su***de Prevention, and the Su***de Prevention Resource Center had conducted their bi-annual survey to understand the public’s beliefs and attitudes about mental health and su***de. The survey measured what the public knows about how to support someone who is struggling and their perceptions of barriers to helping someone at risk for su***de.
Overall, the poll indicatedthat we are continuing to make strides, but there is more to do. We must learn more about su***de and mental health particularly through enhanced research efforts, increased public education around su***de prevention, and by advocating for improved access to care and robust crisis services.
91% of survey respondents recorded they perceive mental health as equal to or more important than physical health.
91% reported that they believed su***de can be prevented.
95% reported they would would take action if someone close to them was thinking about su***de.
