Yin Tang- one of the most widely known acupuncture poins there is. And it's well known for good reason! Its associated with enlightenment, equilibrium, and clarity. Some horses love being rubbed here, and some dont. Take note and be respectful of that! If they have been ignored or talked over, this is very Commonly a spot they quickly begin to guard. Horses stay safe by staying continually connected to the herd. So that if one detects a possible threat, its communicated to the whole herd within moments. A disconnected herd-member isnt trusted in this area. But when you are listening and responsive, you are acting as a trustworthy and safe herd-member. Then it becomes an area that can be quite powerful and connecting for you and your horse.

What is the main muscle responsible for respiration? The diaphragm! Let's visualize its function with an elegant model

The left side of the picture is done, the right side of the picture is not. Look how the ear has moved away from the poll on the left, and the muscles have relaxed unlike the right side that is still bunched up🤍 yay better respiration and pain free polls!

The left side of the picture is done, the right side is not! Look at the lengthening in sinuses along the bridge of the nose, the dropping of the nostril, and reduced puffiness around the eye. The other eye you can see is slightly bulged out from sinus pressure. Fixing things at the top makes the rest so much better! Go head-first technique!

Twitching! It's a fascinating behavior because it tells us a lot about where our horse's nervous system is. in the first video you see REM twitching in the eyes, muzzle, ears, and diaphragm. The equine nervous system is doing some AMAZING stuff here. in REM, the nervous system replays memories and learned movements/behaviors, strengthening new and helpful circuits. so you can imagine sleep and down-regulation is very important for young horses learning new skills! REM twitching is also indicative of released emotional load stored in the body, and resolved unfinished muscle sequences. the full diaphragm spasm we see in the video is the mare's nervous system basically running a full diagnostic of the whole motor system, which can then be recalibrated. It's beautiful! this is the kind of twitching we also see during bodywork.
In the second video we see some not so healthy twitching. This occurs when the nervous system is overloaded by something like a chronic or painful condition. Not being able to keep up with the strain of whatever the situation is, the motor nerve gets stuck in a loop, unable to stop firing. It's neurologically the same thing that happens when someone experiencing burn out develops an eye-twitch. it's a nervous overflow instead of the nervous release we see in REM.

Oh... look how green and warm it was when I took this video... but also look at the smooth and strong core action! When the core moves like this, its a good sign that the back is also soft and healthy. If I have to work to get a knee-jerk gut clench, I know I need to go back and warm up the back and barrel muscles some more. It turns out, when we scare cold muscles too much with these types of exercises, we can actually cause more tension later on. Hip tucks and dips are good examples. Because we are using sensitive nerve clusters to get these movements we should always be respectful and be sure the muscles we are contracting and stretching are ready! Stay warm everybody!

Don't forget you're crazy. What I mean is, horses are simultaneously our best friend and a completely different species. They're our saving grace and our undoing. Horses are really hard! Whoever coined the phrase, "crazy horse girl" was dreadfully accurate. But crazy people just don't stay down, so whatever you and your horse are going through, you got this. Give your horse a hug, remember you are crazier than the problems in front of you, and never forget why you got swept into horses in the first place🤍
