Know your backbends! 💫 Backbending opens the front body, mobilizes the thoracic spine, and energizes the whole body-mind ✨ Three of these backbends—low cobra, sphinx, and upward dog—are common in the course of vinyasa flow and often offered as alternatives to each other, but they are distinct, with different alignment and benefits. It’s useful to know the differences and to be intentional about which backbend you’re choosing to take 🧘🏻‍♀️

🔼 Practice Aparigraha, non grasping, in your Utthita Trikonasna, extended triangle pose.

👉 Instead of reaching DOWN to try to get the front hand to the floor, try reaching OUT to create length along your side body, and then letting your hand land wherever it lands — including, maybe, on a prop 🧱

Feel how different it is — physically, but also energetically and mentally — when you approach this pose with the intention of creating as much length, space, and opening as you can, rather than the intention of reaching the floor because it’s the “deeper” version of the pose 🧘🏻‍♀️🙌

Avoid the ouch! ❤️‍🩹 Here’s a tip for your Prasarita Padottanasana, wide-legged forward fold, to help prevent strain in your hamstring insertion area. Try balancing your weight across the whole foot when you’re in your fold🦶

Wrist pain in vinyasa yoga is real 🧘🏻‍♀️We spend a lot of time putting weight on our hands and wrists when we flow. Students often ask me what they can do to address sensitive, weak, or painful wrists. In addition to practicing proper form in our poses (which I post about a lot!), here are some simple stretches and strengtheners I’ve found helpful to support my wrists and my practice. Healthy wrists = sustainable practice✨

👉🏼 And remember, sometimes the best thing you can do for pain is rest—don’t push through it! No pain, no gain is NOT part of yoga 🙏🏼
