Morning battles and school refusal making the new school year harder?

Back-to-school stress often triggers school anxiety or school refusal in kids and teens.

The SPACE class starting September 29th gives parents a research-backed framework to build their child's confidence without increasing family accommodation.

This class is led by Dr. Meredith Y, and is an eight-week virtual group that meets Tuesdays from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.

One of the most practical tools for teens during the back-to-school transition is taking care of the physical basics that emotional regulation depends on.

DBT calls this the PLEASE skill:

PL (Physical Illness): Rest when you're sick. Let your body recover.

E (Eating): Focus on regular, balanced meals. Skipping food amplifies stress and mood swings.

A (Avoid mood-altering substances): Watch out for excess caffeine, which spikes anxiety fast.

S (Sleep): Protect your sleep schedule. Almost nothing functions well without enough rest.

E (Exercise): Get moving. Even twenty minutes of physical activity improves mood and focus.

Share this framework with your teen without making it a lecture. "Your brain works better when your body gets what it needs" is a message teens can connect with.

Back-to-school prep usually comes down to supply lists, new clothes, and calendar planning.

But research points to something else entirely when it comes to setting teens up for a strong year.

Teens who feel connected, whether to one trusted adult or a solid friend, handle the stress of starting school so much better.

You can't buy connection in the school supply aisle, but you can build it anywhere. In the car. Over dinner. On a quiet walk. It happens in the small, everyday moments before the first bell rings.

Teen burnout doesn't always look like a breakdown.

Sometimes it looks like sitting on the couch for two hours without eating or talking. Sometimes it looks like losing interest in things they used to love. Sometimes it's a flatness in their mood that's different from sadness but just as serious.

Burnout in teenagers is a state of physical, emotional, and motivational depletion that results from sustained stress without adequate recovery.

And it responds to real support, not just a weekend off.

Before the rush of the school year takes over, try this simple family habit.

Sit down together without phones and have everyone answer these four questions:

1. "What's one word I want this school year to be defined by?"
2. "What's one thing I want to do differently than last year?"
3. "What's one thing I need from our family to make this year work?"
4. "What's one thing I'm looking forward to?"

Write the answers down and put them somewhere visible. Then come back to them in November.

It's a practice that does something quietly powerful. It turns the start of the school year from something that just happens to your family into something you step into together.

Forget the fancy planners and productivity hacks. It isn't even therapy, though therapy helps too.

It's sleep.

Teens who head into the school year with a solid sleep routine handle stress better, stay more emotionally balanced, and face way less anxiety.

The trick is starting now instead of trying to fix it the night before school starts. Just move bedtime and wake time fifteen minutes earlier every few days. By the time the first bell rings, their body clock is set and their nervous system is ready.
