🤱 August is National Breastfeeding Month, and August 1–7 is World Breastfeeding Week—a time to celebrate, support, and raise awareness about breastfeeding, while recognizing that every family's feeding journey is unique.

Myth: Breastfeeding comes naturally for everyone.
Fact: Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both parent and baby, and support can make a big difference.

Many families need time, practice, and encouragement as they learn to breastfeed. It's common to have questions or face challenges along the way, and seeking support from a healthcare provider or lactation consultant can make a meaningful difference. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not failure.

💙 Every feeding journey is different. Whether you're breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, or formula feeding, every family deserves evidence-based information, compassionate support, and respect.

Join our partners at UAMS and Arkansas Children's Hospital for Girl-ology and Guy-ology on Sunday, August 23. These interactive classes are designed for youth and a parent or other trusted adult to learn together in a comfortable, age-appropriate setting.

💗 Girl-ology (ages 8–14) covers topics like puberty, menstruation, hygiene, nutrition, emotions, body changes, internet safety, and building respect for yourself and others.

💙 Guy-ology (ages 9–13) explores growth and development, anatomy, hygiene, nutrition, sports safety, emotions, internet safety, and understanding girls' puberty.

These sessions will be held at the Jackson T. Stephens Spine Institute on the UAMS campus in Little Rock and led by trusted experts from UAMS and ACH, giving families accurate, evidence-based information in a supportive environment.

Nurses from the Arkansas Center for Women & Infants' Health at the UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences launched an outreach initiative to support postpartum mothers. The Proactive Postpartum Call Center began its pilot phase in May 2025, initially contacting all new moms who delivered at UAMS. It has since expanded to include six additional hospitals, with the goal of reaching all 33 birthing facilities statewide. These calls, which take place during the critical six weeks after childbirth, cover topics such as physical recovery, infant care, lactation support, housing, formula or diaper assistance, and insurance re-enrollment.

“By reaching out to them during the first six weeks after birth, we are connecting with these women at a time when maternal mortality risk is at its highest. That means that for some of these women, these calls can be the difference between life and death,” explains Manuel E. Tejada, program director at UAMS. One mother shared her gratitude in writing, “I am thankful for the hotline that calls to check up on you. If they had not called, I would not have known to go to triage and would not have known that I had postpartum preeclampsia.”

Sylvia has been an extraordinary partner in our mission to make sure the women of East Arkansas have the support, care, and education they deserve before, during, and after pregnancy. From a reassuring presence in those early months to steady, compassionate care through the postpartum season, she has shown what community-based doula support can truly mean for moms and babies.

This milestone isn’t just a personal achievement (though it’s a huge one!), it’s a step forward for maternal health across our state. It means more families in our communities will have a trusted, trained advocate by their side during one of life’s most important journeys.

My name is Sylvia Halliburton, and I am a passionate perinatal doula devoted to providing compassionate care and support. I approach every perinatal journey with respect and empathy, whether supporting families at a hospital, a birthing center, or during a home birth. I am the founder of Arkansas Birthing Partners and Family Power Hub, which I have led for two years, and I have served as a Volunteer Bunch Leader for the Arkansas Birthing Project for over 10 years, supporting mothers and families across central, eastern, and southeast Arkansas.

Their team provides valuable services including prenatal and postnatal care, wellness exams, STI testing, contraceptive services, and support for common gynecological concerns.

This kind of care makes a meaningful difference for the individuals we serve.

We have so much to celebrate this month! 🎉

Our Proactive Postpartum Call Center team was recognized as a finalist for the 2025 UAMS Auxiliary Team Impact Award! This recognition comes on the heels of the call center's first anniversary.

We couldn't be prouder of what this team has accomplished. In year one, our nurses made thousands of calls to postpartum women across Arkansas, reaching families from 20 of the state's 31 birthing hospitals.

Behind every number is a real family. One patient told us, "If they had not called, I wouldn't have known I had postpartum preeclampsia." That's why we do this work, to make sure that no one having a baby in Arkansas falls through the cracks.
