Through inpatient and outpatient community-based experiences, including opportunities with Alpharus House, St. John’s College of Nursing students see how nursing care takes shape across different settings, populations and needs.

Dr. Bednarchik, an advanced practice nurse and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, is looking forward to helping students discover “just how broad and meaningful mental health nursing can be.”

For her, that learning is also deeply human: “Sometimes the most powerful nursing intervention begins with simply showing up, listening, and seeing the person beyond the diagnosis.”

These experiences help students broaden their perspective, strengthen clinical judgment and better understand the role nurses play throughout the community.

Three generations. Three individual stories. One college.

Janice Kerwin graduated from St. John's College of Nursing in 1976, certain she'd be the only nurse in the family. Twenty-four years later, Kimberly Stuckey (Janice's future daughter-in-law) graduated from the same college. This spring, Kimberly Kerwin pinned her own daughter, Kylie Kerwin, at graduation.

All three women forged their own paths, graduated St. John's College of Nursing practice-ready, and went straight into HSHS St. John's Hospital.

Some traditions aren't planned. They just take root. 💙

For some of our students, yesterday was their very first day at St. John’s College of Nursing. For others, it marked the beginning of another semester and another step toward what comes next.

Either way, there’s something special about the first day back: new faces, familiar ones, full classrooms and a campus moving again.
