Two birth workers glowing after a beautiful, speedy, Friday the 13th homebirth this morning! 🌞 Our dear Michaela has been a PLD doula and team member since 2020, became a Certified Professional Midwife in 2024, and she's the owner of the thriving practice, Prairie Child Midwifery. But this was our very first time attending a birth together where Michaela was the client's midwife and I was the client's doula. Such a special experience working together caring for this lovely family today (who are also repeat PLD clients)!

A little heads-up 🤍

I’ll be traveling for ~5 days in mid-November for the 2026 Born Free Twins & Breech Gathering. Deepening my skills, making new connections, and taking time to recharge is part of how I honor birth & keep families safe and supported at home.

‼️Because I’ll be out of state, I may not be able to serve families with due dates close to that window. There will be other wonderful midwives still in town, but a group of us from St. Louis will be heading down for the gathering! Which is another reason I want to share this with you all now. Home birth midwives’ calendars fill up, & back-up support may be limited that week.

Just for reference, if you conceive on Valentine’s Day, your due date would be November 7th. 😉

If you are hoping to conceive soon, or find out you’re pregnant, don’t hesitate to reach out! I’d love to chat.

➡️ I am also now full/unavailable through the end of September 2026, minus some potential room in April. But you are always welcome to reach out just in case I may be able to help or I can connect you with someone!

2025 was such a special year — it was my first full year in practice as a midwife!

I had the honor of supporting 41 families (43 babies) through their births last year in various roles. I still took a few doula clients (which included 2 repeats and 1 three-peat client!), and 2 births I attended were as back-up.

1 home birth I attended was accidental/unplanned — I arrived with a few moments to spare & caught my dear friend’s baby in the middle of the May EF3 tornado! It’s a day I will never forget.

Below are some other fun statistics I decided to keep track of last year.

To everyone who entrusted me with your care, thank you — and I miss you! 💖

Love,
Michaela

🪷 Is the call to the sacred art of birth work quietly whispering to you? Doulas are in the business of sacred work. The wisest doulas are those who are deeply in-tune with themselves, have invested in doing work on their habits, beliefs, fears, biases, and more, and are willing to set healthy boundaries to protect themselves & their energy. The strongest birth workers are comfortable being present amidst even the most intense of labor sensations and emotions. They know how to listen, observe, and gently guide their clients during labor. They know how support & inform without judgement. And they can be a steady presence for clients during labor because they regularly prioritize their own self-care & personal growth.

Are these words resonating with you & stirring up a fire in your soul? Our Professional Doula Training is a heart-centered experience that will ground you, equip you & help you step into your power as a doula. 💖

Are you ready to start your doula journey? We'd love to offer you this gift to make it even easier to experience our transformative doula training! This cord was quite wrapped around the baby! A few hours before this photo was taken, I had unwrapped a nuchal cord x4.

Did you know: In approximately 1 in 4 births, there is a nuchal cord (umbilical cord around the neck).

But the likelihood of a quadruple nuchal cord is pretty rare: Approximately 1 in 1000!

Nuchal cords are incredibly common and rarely cause any issues. As a midwife, I can help by doing something called the somersault maneuver as a baby is born to unwrap it. Or unwrap, unwrap, unwrap, unwrap… 😅

Today, we celebrate the strength, love, and value of mothers everywhere.

As a midwife, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside so many incredible people through the raw and real moments of pregnancy & postpartum, birth & loss, feeding & bleeding, laughter & tears, healing & becoming.

This photo takes me back to a time when I was preparing for one of the biggest transformations of my life—becoming a mother. I remember the anticipation, the unknowns, the quiet strength I didn’t even know I had yet.

Birth is not just a physical journey. It’s a spiritual one. It calls on every part of you. And every person who carries life, no matter the outcome, holds so much power & courage within.

Today, and *every day,* we must honor all who are preparing for birth, all who are recovering from & processing their journeys, all who are grieving their child or their own mother, and all who are deep in the work of parenting. You are strong. You are capable. You are truly just so, so important and deserve to hear that every day.

To my son: Thank you for making me a mother, and for all of the joy you bring into my life.

To my own mother: Thank for raising me, protecting me, loving me, believing in me, and being my best friend.

To everyone I’ve supported — past, present, and future: Thank you for entrusting me with such an important time in your life. I will fight for you, encourage you, and pour the same love my own midwives poured into me. Your work is sacred, & I am so honored to spend my life holding space for it.

Love,
Michaela

It was such an honor to meet the legendary Dr. Stu () last night during his stop in St. Louis! So grateful for the wisdom and stories shared, especially surrounding his experience in breech, twins, and VBAC. Thank you so much for making the time to visit and answer our questions!

Here are some great resources from Dr. Stu:
- The Birthing Instincts Podcast
- Reteach Breech seminars
- Breech birth at home: outcomes of 60 breech and 109 cephalic planned home and birth center births (BMC Pregnancy & Childbirth)
- Twin home birth: Outcomes of 100 sets of twins in the care of a single practitioner (PLOS One)

And a special thank you to the organizers for making this happen!

Attended a perinatal skills workshop at HSHS St. John’s in Springfield, IL!

Had the chance to use their simulators, + shared stories & tips between both hospital and home birth providers. This was an incredible workshop hosted by Ashley, Kathleen, & MFM Dr. Unal! They’re all doing amazing work, and building these relationships brings me so much joy.

I am always grateful for the chance to learn and connect with fellow birth workers. I could talk about this stuff all day every day… and I suppose I do! 😆

Bonus: My NRP Advanced Provider certification is renewed for another 2 years. ✨
