MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY: A Historic Regional Collaboration to Empower Our First Responders 🚔🤝

Over the past months, I have had the distinct honor of working closely with the St. Louis County Police Department (STLCPD) and the ST. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Past And Present (SLMPD) to strengthen our regional support for and expand our workforce pipeline.

After several productive meetings, I am thrilled to share that STLCPD and SLMPD are joining forces in a historic, unified push to elevate First Responder career pathways across the St. Louis region! Together with the Regional Business Council (RBC), STL.works, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (ULSTLL), and St. Louis Community College (STLCC), we are promoting and providing a shared workforce strategy with real opportunities for our community for employment and to enhance the community.

This collaboration is already yielding incredible results, including funding for increased internship pipelines for a Dispatcher Academy and a Drone Academy in the fall 2026 and beyond, made possible by Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development(MO DHEWFD) and supported by the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis , STL.works, and the Family and Workforce Centers of America. Thank you MO DHEWFD Director Julie Carter for your leadership and support.

It was not my fate to be alive for the Jubilee of Independence, centennial, or bicentennial — 200th birthday of the nation and I may not live to see the tricentennial — 300th birthday of America.

One thing is certain, I am grateful to be a citizen, retired from public service, here, in the USA, right now for the semiquincentenial birthday.

Juneteenth is too often reduced to a simple story: “the day enslaved African Americans in Texas found out they were free.” Don’t be deceived.

The truth is far more rich and revealing about the long, determined fight to free Texas….from itself (Sovereignty to preserve slavery in Texas versus salvation and justice).

The land we now call Texas had been part of Mexico just 29 years before Juneteenth. And Mexico had abolished slavery in 1829 under President Vicente R. Guerrero, a man of African and Indigenous descent. Yet Anglo‑American settlers continued to migrate into Mexican Texas, bringing enslaved people with them in direct violation of Mexican law. By 1832, tensions escalated. Anglo settlers pushed for: (1) ending immigration restrictions (of the Anglo settlers of the US coming to Mexico) that limited further US settlement, (2) recognition of squatters as legal immigrants, and (3) a separate Texas state within Mexico (Sovereignty).

At the heart of these demands was the desire to continue enslaving people despite Mexico’s abolition. These conflicts ignited the Texas Revolution. When Texas, "the Lone Star", declared independence from Mexico in 1836, it did so as a pro‑slavery republic, defended by men like Davy Crockett and James Bowie, both deeply tied to extending slavery and the slave trade.

Texas later entered the US in 1845 as a slave state, and its leaders continued fighting to preserve slavery through the 1840s, 1850s, and into the Civil War.
Even after the Confederacy collapsed in spring 1865, Texas remained defiant. Enslavers fled there during the war, believing its remoteness and Gulf access would shield them from federal enforcement. They continued to hold Black Americans in bo***ge months after the Confederacy’s military defeat.

That is why Juneteenth (June 19, 1865) and every day matters. A day history did not repeat. History often echoes, but even the echo was undone.

Juneteenth marks the day Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston with Black newly freedman as federal troops to force emancipation, not announce it. They dismantled the last stronghold of slavery in the United States, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863).

Even then, Texas resisted. The state refused to act on the 13th Amendment during its 1866 constitutional convention. Its governor, James Throckmorton, openly opposed Reconstruction and was removed by military order in 1867.

Over a year after Juneteenth, US President Andrew Johnson, a Tennessee slaveholder himself (previously) of Sam and Dolly Johnson and 8 other enslaved people, declared the rebellion fully ended, citing Texas as the final holdout.

Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom for Blacks. It is a declaration of freedom from the uglies of sins and selfishness. Freedom for all (the) US. It is a reminder of resistance, truth, setting free/salvation, a new force, fate, and Faith for a new day. A new day is coming.

What an amazing and impactful experience for all!

About 30 years ago, I was an 18-year-old with a career pathway and certificate to teach and Parkway Southwest Middle gave me my first of first chances to teach. I was mentored by the best on the Hawaii Method of Algebra, collaboration, and more. Being Missouri's youngest teacher, it was truly a high-risk high reward opportunity for all involved for which I am still grateful.

Now as Saint Louis University SLU School of Education’s 1st Distinguished Fellow, Superintendent Emeritus, and RBC STL.works Champion for Workforce Development, it is a pleasure to share formally that the Regional Business Council and STL.works are pleased to have produced this powerful Parkway Schools Career Experience on December 16th at Saint Louis University.

We will welcome nearly all of Parkway School District’s 8th Graders (1,200+) to SLU to explore career pathways through hands-on expos and breakout sessions, guided by professionals who inspire and empower. This collaboration ensures students receive real experiences and connect their passions and promise with people ready to support their future careers.

Special thanks to my colleagues, Alandon Pitts (RBC) and Ryan Wilson (SLU), and my classmate and friend, Gina Covington-James, Ed.S. (Parkway School District) for their leadership in coordinating this transformative day.

We salute Rev. Dr. MLK Jr through service: Realizing the Dream.

To kick off the weekend, the King Family and Legacy+, which I am proud to serve as a national board director, and NFL announced a five-year commitment to Realizing the Dream (RTD), a platform created by Martin Luther King III, Arndrea Waters King and Yolanda Renee King that aims to unite more than 7 million young people, 200,000 educators, and millions of employees around the globe through a series of service initiatives focused on the tenets of social change and community impact. Over the next five years, the NFL and additional corporations will work with the King Family and Legacy+ to help fulfill Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision for an equitable and united America.
