đź’šMANDY UPDATE #3đź’š
As if Mandy hasn’t already been through enough over the last few days, we received another unexpected and heartbreaking setback.
For the past 2 almost 3 years Mandy has been on the kidney transplant list with UI Health, she was told that once she received her kidney, there would be a guest house available for her to stay in during the approximately 12 weeks she would need to remain in Chicago after transplant.
Now, just 2 days after her kidney transplant, she is being told that housing will NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE.
This comes after Mandy underwent her kidney transplant and, within hours, had to be rushed back into emergency surgery due to a hematoma. After the hematoma was removed, her surgeon told us that Mandy experienced uncontrollable bleeding and required such a significant amount of donor blood products that he said he had “lost count” of how many bags she received. She had just survived a major transplant followed by a frightening and unexpected surgical complication—and now, only two days later, she is being faced with the added stress of not knowing where she will stay once she is discharged.
While she should be able to focus on one thing—healing—she is lying in a hospital room trying to figure out where she is going to live when the hospital discharges her in the next few days.
Mandy lives 4.5 hours away from Chicago. Her three boys are back home waiting for their mom. She is a single mother, she is unable to work while recovering, and she now has no income coming in. She came to Chicago expecting the post-transplant housing she had been told would be available, so she was completely unprepared for the possibility of having to find and pay for housing on such short notice.
She should not have to spend these first days with her new kidney worrying about whether she will have somewhere to stay.
We are doing everything we can to advocate for Mandy and find resources, but right now we don’t know what the next few days are going to look like.
If you are able to donate, share this fundraiser, or know of housing resources in the Chicago area for transplant patients and their families, please reach out. Every donation and every share means more than you know.
Mandy has fought so hard to get to this moment. We just want to give her the chance to focus on healing and getting home to her boys. đź’š
Please continue to keep Mandy in your prayers. 🙏🏽💚
