According to RunSignupโ€™s 2025 Race Trends Report, race participation grew another 5% across all distances in 2025, following 8% growth in 2024 and 10% growth from 2022 to 2023. Their Top 100 Largest Races report also found that 75 of the top 100 races had more participants in 2025 than in 2024, with those races growing an average of 6.5%.

Yes, running is great for your cardiovascular health. But for so many adults, it becomes something much bigger.

I like to say running is good for the heart and the ๐Ÿ’š.

๐Ÿ”นIt gives you a goal to chase.

๐Ÿ”นIt gives you a community to be part of.

๐Ÿ”นIt gives you an outlet after the youth, high school, or college sports years are over.

๐Ÿ”นIt gives you a reason to get outside, explore new places, and spend more time in nature.

๐Ÿ”นIt gives you a way to prove to yourself that you can do hard things.

Structure, stress relief, connection, confidence, and accomplishment are what many of us crave in adulthood.

Whether you are training for your first 5K, your next marathon, or just trying to stay consistent, we love seeing more people find their way into the running community.

And if pain, tightness, or recurring injuries are keeping you from enjoying running, we are here to help you keep moving.

We talk a lot about exercise for strength, endurance, body composition, and heart health. But one of the biggest benefits is what it does for your brain.

Research has shown that regular aerobic exercise can improve memory and even increase the size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain heavily involved in learning and memory. Another review found that exercise can increase BDNF, a protein that supports brain cell growth, brain plasticity, and overall brain function.

That means movement is not just helping you look better or perform better. It may also help you think better, focus better, handle stress better, and support long term brain health.

At Modern Motion, this is part of the bigger picture. We care about helping people move well, feel well, and stay active for life. Whether that means getting out of pain, improving recovery, building strength, or finding the right plan to keep your body moving, all of that can have an impact far beyond your muscles and joints.

Exercise is medicine for the body, but it is powerful for the brain too.

If pain, stiffness, or recurring injuries are making it harder for you to stay consistent with exercise, that is exactly where we may be able to help.

If youโ€™re racing the Cleveland Marathon this weekend, keep this in mind: warm weather can slow your pace by about 60 to 90 seconds per mile depending on the conditions, your effort, and how well you handle heat.

Your watch may say you are off pace, but if the temperature and humidity are up, your body is already working harder. A smart adjustment early can save your race later.

A lot of runners only look at air temperature, but dew point often matters more. It tells you how much moisture is in the air. When the dew point is higher, sweat does not evaporate as well, which makes it harder for your body to cool itself.

Under 55 = pretty manageable
55 to 60 = starts to feel tougher
60 to 65 = noticeable impact on performance
Above 65 = uncomfortable fast for endurance racing

So even if the temperature does not look terrible, a high dew point can make the race feel much harder.

Do not just rely on plain water. During a warm race, fluids plus electrolytes can help replace what you lose through sweat. Drink consistently throughout the race. Small sips along the way are usually better than waiting until you already feel overheated.

Water is not just for drinking. Pouring cold water on the inside of your wrists and the back of your neck can help bring body temperature down during the race.

A good rule is to dress like it is about 15 to 20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature. So if it is 50 at the start, dress more like it is 70. Bring throwaway layers you can easily remove once you get moving.

Choose light-colored, breathable clothing. Wear a hat or visor to block the sun, and do not skip sunscreen!

Race smart and good luck to everyone running this weekend!

Whether you are lining up for the 5K or the full marathon, race week is not the time to do more. It is the time to recover, stay consistent, and set yourself up to feel your best on race day.

A few simple reminders this week:

โ–ช๏ธ Cut back on extra training
Focus on sleep, hydration, and nutrition
Do not try anything new with shoes, fuel, or gear
Have a plan for race morning
Trust the training you have already done

The goal this week is to get to the start line feeling fresh, confident, and ready to go.

When you are training or exercising, some discomfort is normal. The biggest question I get asked is, โ€œHow do I know if itโ€™s an injury or just soreness?

Use the S.O.R.E. acronym to know when itโ€™s time to pay attention โฌ‡๏ธ

๐Ÿ”นS โ€“ Sharp or stabbing
Muscle soreness is usually dull, achy, and spread out.
Sharp, pinpoint pain is often a sign of tissue irritation or injury.

๐Ÿ”นO โ€“ Ongoing
Typical soreness peaks around 24โ€“48 hours and then improves.
If your pain is lingering or not getting better after a few days, thatโ€™s a red flag.

๐Ÿ”นR โ€“ Restrictive
Soreness might make you feel tight, but it shouldnโ€™t limit your ability to move.
If youโ€™re changing your stride, avoiding certain movements, or feeling โ€œstuck,โ€ your body is compensating.

๐Ÿ”นE โ€“ Evolving
Pain should trend in the right direction.
If itโ€™s getting worse, spreading or changing in nature- you may have problem.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
Not every ache means stop, but ignoring the wrong type of pain is how small issues turn into bigger injuries.

The taper is one of the hardest parts of marathon training. Not the mileage, but because of the mental game.

Runners worry about losing fitness, eat less than they should, stop strength work, or panic when they feel phantom pains.

Hereโ€™s the truth: tapering is about recovery, not rest. Your fitness is already built.

The taper lets your body absorb that work, restore energy, and arrive fresh on race day.

Which taper myth have you believed before? Drop it in the comments

Super shoes arenโ€™t just marketing; theyโ€™ve legitimately changed distance running. But I still get asked daily, โ€œWhat actually are Supershoes?

It comes down to 3 key things:

๐Ÿ”นHigh-stack, lightweight foam: usually PEBA-based foams that are more energy-efficient than traditional EVA

๐Ÿ”นCarbon fiber plate: adds stiffness to reduce foot dorsiflexion, lowering energy loss in these joints during push-off

๐Ÿ”นRocker geometry: designed to keep you moving forward with less energy loss

Put those together: better running economy. Studies show improvements of ~2โ€“4%, which is massive over a marathon.

Simple: they make running feel easier at faster paces.

Less energy cost = better performance + faster recovery between hard efforts.

Thatโ€™s why you see them everywhere from elites to everyday runners chasing PRs.

These arenโ€™t daily trainers.

Save them for races and key workouts (tempo runs, long runs with pace work)

Limit use to keep them feeling fresh and responsive

Most runners have their nutrition dialed in.
Protein โœ”๏ธ Carbs โœ”๏ธ Hydration โœ”๏ธ

But one thing almost always gets overlooked
Micronutrients โ€ผ๏ธ, specifically Antioxidants.

Every run creates oxidative stress.
This is the buildup of free radicals (unstable molecules) produced when your body uses oxygen to create energy during running.

In small amounts, this is normal and even helpful for adaptation.

But with higher mileage, harder efforts, or poor recovery, it can start to break down muscle tissue, increase inflammation, and slow recovery.

Antioxidants help neutralize those free radicals.
Support muscle recovery
Reduce excessive inflammation
Protect cells and tissues
Help keep your immune system strong during training

Think color in your diet:
โ†’ Berries
Leafy greens
Beets
Sweet potatoes
Citrus

Turmeric (curcumin) is one of my go-toโ€™s:
โ†’ Supports healthy inflammation response
Helps with muscle soreness and joint stress
Useful during high mileage or race prep

Ask about this at your next appointment so we can determine if this supplement is right for you.

Macros fuel your runs.
Micronutrients determine how well you recover from them.
