Not every woman needs hormone therapy. But women who can benefit from it shouldn’t be afraid to have the conversation.
Hormone therapy can be an effective option for bothersome menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and disrupted sleep—when it’s appropriate for the individual woman and the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
At the same time, we need to be careful about some of the claims surrounding hormone therapy. It shouldn’t be presented as something every woman needs simply to prevent heart disease or dementia.
What we DO know is that feeling better matters.
When you’re no longer waking up throughout the night drenched in sweat, you may sleep better. When you sleep better, you may have more energy to exercise, make healthier choices, and simply feel more like yourself during the day.
Menopause care shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.
The better questions are:
Are your symptoms affecting your quality of life?
Is hormone therapy appropriate and safe for you?
Do the potential benefits outweigh your individual risks?
If so, hormone therapy may be a very reasonable option—and you deserve to have that conversation with your healthcare provider.
