Chiropractic and breastfeeding
While breastfeeding may be natural, that doesn’t imply it’s easy! It is an intricate art that both mom and baby are active participants in mastering.
Chiropractic helps ease common breastfeeding struggles by targeting so many aspects:
Cranial nerve stimulation -
💖 cranial nerves innervate the tongue controlling coordination and seal to palate
Cranial adjusting -
💖 cerebral spinal fluid pressure contributes to comfort while nursing
💖 sphenoid bone positioning and movement directly effects the tongues ability to create a seal
Cervical spine -
💖 cervical tension and subluxations leading to side preference or discomfort
Full spine approach -
💖 primitive reflexes controlling root, suck, and swallow reflex
💖 regulating autonomic nervous system (fight/flight vs rest/digest) for a comfortable baby
A comfortable breastfeeding experience matters for more reasons than simply comfort alone. Breastfeeding is considered baby’s second milestone (first being birth!). When there is dysfunction here, it is an early sign of nervous system stress.
Even when bottle feeding is preferred, these functions are still important for development and preventing issues down the line!
If your child is struggling with falling asleep at the breast, side preference, stiffness/arching, or poor latch, chiropractic care may be able to help!
